Nehemiah 8:8 They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.
8:9 And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, "This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn or weep." For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law.
8:10 Then he said to them, "Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength."
There is a tremendous need in every believer in Christ Jesus when things get tough. That need is for the Joy of the Lord.So lets see just how these people got the joy of the Lord....
First.. Nehemiah 8:8 They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading....Nehemiah read from the Book of the Law, and explained it's meaning to the people. It's one thing to preach/teach the Scriptures, but if the people don't understand, it accomplishes nothing.
Second..The people were told, because this day is Holy, go home and rejoice, eat and drink and give what you have to those who don't have what you have.
Third..Because they understood the Book of the Lord, which IMO, declares what pleases Jehovah. Even today, we don't adhere to the Law of Moses to obtain the righteousness from Jehovah, we adhere to our Faith in our Savior Jesus the Son of God Who died for us and His Blood not only covers our sins, past, present, and future, but sends them away from the remembrance of God, where as His legal decree is that He will never recall a sin that He has forgiven and accuse us in judgment..Praise His Holy Name!!
I have experienced the joy of the Lord because I view the Commandments in Exodus 20 as how God would like me to treat Him because He and I are in a love (Agape) relationship. He says, "If you love me, keep my Commands" Not that that makes me more righteous, keeping His Commands proves outwardly that He and I are in a love relationship.
Keeping Jehovah's Commands, and Jesus' Commands (teachings) found in Matthew chapter five, not only proves my love for the Father and His Son, but it's an open display to others, especially the unsaved, that there is a God in Heaven that makes a difference in my life and my life is worth living to the glory of the Godhead.
So, to receive the Joy of the Lord, first fall in love with the 10 Commandments. By that I mean digest slowly each Command and realize the importance of each one for our very life. Then evaluate whether or not we are violating a Command, if so, repent.
After reviewing the 10 Commandments, go to Matthew 5 and do the same as you did with God's Commandments. Not only read the "Blessed" (Gk. Spiritually prosperous) of each statement of Jesus, but drink it in, meditate on each one and see how Spiritually prosperous Jesus wants us to become.
As we feed on these two area's of God's Word, His Joy will begin to flow from His great big heart of love to your mind and into your heart. I have honestly experienced this flow. Even this morning at 4:00am, it started, and here it is 12:04 in the noon hour and the Joy is still controlling my head and heart. Praise YHWH!!
The final touch on this teaching is Psalm 73:25 & 26....
73:25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
There we see where the Joy of the Lord comes from. It comes from His Child that has no idols, no means of support, no means of obtaining any help outside of what Our Lord is willing to supply. Look at this. Whom have I in Heaven but You? NO ONE!! O Lord, You are the strength of my heart and my Portion forever....It's no wonder that I have the Joy of the Lord, thank you Jesus!!
