The commandments were meant for our benefit. They are a guide.
Nobody would object to the truth in that. I think the commandments are primarily a revelation of God's will thereby revealing more of His nature and glory. But anything of God cannot be intended for a wrong purpose and of course, they are a guide to walk in His ways.

All we have to do is follow the Lord's commandments.
That's true too. And very simple when you put it that way. But please complete your statement - This is "all we have to do"....for what? For our justification?

The law is simple. All righteous people can enter heaven.
Pardon my confusion here. I would normally have agreed with your above two statements as being true based on 1John 5:3 and 1Cor 6:9 if I had seen them separately. But together, they seem to imply that a person is made righteous by obeying the commandments which are not grievous - is that what you meant?

It isn’t that we are made righteous. It is that our sin leads to bad consequences, but if we resist the temptation to sin, then we don’t experience those bad consequences.

Thank you for clarifying that.

As long as "not sinning" is dependent entirely on the grace of God, I'd agree to all that you've said so far.

So if I'm understanding you correctly your saying follow the "LAW" and you will be made righteous and go to haven, but to do so one must follow the law, and I assume you are speaking of the law as in the 10 commandments, and as further described in the OT? Is that correct?

Please excuse my interruption. Elijah believes that because we follow the commandments we don't have to fear the wrath of God making this life heaven to him. Obviously there was a time in his past that he was not happy, as a sinner and in fear of God. He is a beautiful babe and we should take care that he does not feel like we want to attack him. Just a heads up.

"It is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous." Rom. 2:13 The law referenced in this statement is a law that has been added to the law. "For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change (an addition) also of the law." Heb. 7:12 Therefore salvation from the penalty of the law, eternal death, is predicated upon the conviction that this law must be obeyed. For those who refuse there is no recourse avaliable.

The Lord shows us what sin is. It is up to us to stop committing those sins.

I see.

We are not "made righteous." Sin brings trouble into our lives, sometimes terrible trouble. By resisting the temptation to sin, trouble does not enter our lives and we have absolute peace.

As for the law, the Lord will teach each one of us, individually, what he expects from us. This describes the process perfectly, or at least, it describes what has happened to me:

But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it upon their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Jer 31:33 RSV

What is the law? Everybody should ask that question, but few seem to want to know. The Lord will teach each of us on an individual basis, as I said, but whatever Jesus commanded in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John is law. The Lord has taught me that unchastity, pride, and insobriety are sins. Remember, foremost, to love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, and soul. Love your neighbor as yourself.

Sorry, but I don't understand what you are saying.

To be sinless then?

Yes, we must become sinless. We have all sinned, but we must stop:

You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matt 5 :48 RSV

There was a time in the past when I sinned a lot and life was quite nightmarish. Sin can really blow up in your face. When you resist the temptation to sin, you don’t have that problem. You have absolute peace. If you really love the Lord and love people, you will make the effort to resist the temptation to sin.

But the point of this thread is that the law is simple. We don’t have to be geniuses to go to heaven. We just have to obey the law.

Thanks. I do have a few questions I could use your help with.

1. If we are saved by being sinless, what is the purpose of Christ? Specifically his sacrifice on the cross. How does this play into our being perfect?
