Hey Rick,
I heard on the radio this morning how building some of the burms may actually cause more destruction because it would destroy the echo system which supports much of the life in the area. Like the birds who nest directly on the flat sand and the underwater life that depends on what's under there, and to dredge it all up would destroy the both echo systems.
I'm not going to pretend to be a scientist, but wow. I mean, the birds are in danger if you build the burms or if oil washes on the shore, so that's sad either way you look at it, but what about under the water? What effect does the oil on top of the water have to the plant life below the water? Dredging wipes out everything under water and destroys the echo system that birds count on to lay their eggs on the beach, (but the beach looks pretty for the tourist once the burns are removed) but what does the oil do to the marine life under the water, I don't really know
And sadly, Evointrinsic is right about the hurricanes with the addition that a hurricane would wipe out the burms in a moment's notice...
What a tough decision..., it's like choosing the best of two evils.
