The religious world teaches that you can believe what you want to believe, and they'll believe what they want to believe, and everybody's going to end up at the same place, they're just going to be taking different roads to get there.
But the Bible teaches that there is only one road to heaven. In Matthew 7:13-14 Jesus taught that that road is very straight and it's very narrow, and there are only going to be few individuals who find that road.
In Matthew 7:21 Jesus teaches us who those individuals are going to be. It's going to be those individuals who do the will of God. Jesus makes it very clear. He said it's not everyone who just says, “Lord, Lord”. You may believe in God, you may think you're doing the right thing, but you have to make sure you're doing what God has commanded you to do.
So how do you know if you're saved? How do you know if you're lost? You know, the Bible teaches us that we can know that we are right with God. In 1 John 5:13 the Bible says, “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know,” notice that. That you what? “That you may know that you have eternal life and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.”
As John was writing, John says I'm letting you know that you can know that you are right. You can have this confidence. You can know that you are saved. But at the same time the other side of that coin teaches us that we can know we are lost.
But why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do the things which I say?” Jesus said why do you call me Lord, Lord? Why are you calling me your Lord but you're not following me and you're not doing what I say? What's the point in that? The answer is there is no point. If you're going to call Jesus Lord, you better do what He says.
And if you're not willing to do what He says, don't call Him your Lord. There's no point in calling Him your Lord if you're not willing to follow Him. And so yes, we must confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. But in doing that, it's more than just a confession. It's understanding that now it's about me submitting my life completely and totally, all of God and none of me.
