There is incredible power in the spoken word. This is why the bible tells us that creation from God was spoken into existence. Genesis 1:1 “Let there be light†God said these words to make light. The first chapter of Genesis is riddled with “Then God said…†because nothing came into existence except by Him speaking it into existence. God had creation described like this so that we would realize the power of His spoken word and in turn, because we were made in His image, the power of our spoken word. There is a promise in 1 Peter 3:10. If you refrain your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit you will love life and see good days. Proverbs 12:14 gives another illustration of this promise. It says the fruit of our mouth is what brings us the goodness that satisfies. The power of our words governs the quality of life we lead.
Imagine that, we can improve the quality of our lives just by what we allow to come out of our mouths. If all you do is talk about how bad everything is then guess what, its all just going to keep being bad. That is why David wrote in Psalm 34:3 “Oh, magnify the Lord with meâ€Â. If you magnify what is good by speaking of it and apply the promise of 1Peter 3:10 and Proverbs 12:14 then your life will be better. That’s just if you magnify what is good. Think of what happens when you speak of the goodness of God, His works, His power, His love. When we speak the magnification of God in everything and everyone around us He becomes magnified in us. How can a life not improve with that happening?
What are you magnifying with your words? Are you magnifying problems with your health? Mental, physical, and spiritual problems occur to all of us. Don’t exclude yourself. Humble yourself before God. We all come against health issues. What we speak about those things has an incredible impact on our recovery and healing. Proverbs 12:18 “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bonesâ€Â. And Proverbs 12:18 “the tongue of the wise promotes health†If you have an injury or an illness I implore you to speak pleasant words of healing to it. God’s word works!
I beg you all, be careful what you speak into the lives of the people around you. The power of your words can change people for good or for bad. Proverbs 12:18 “There is one who speaks like the piercing of a swordâ€Â. That sharp tongue of criticism only magnifies the bad and does nothing to promote learning, diligents, and a want to do things correctly. When you speak the truth to someone be careful how you say it! Paul wrote to the Ephesians in chapter 4 verse 15 telling them to speak the truth in love so we can grow up in every way into Christ. I believe this goes along with Proverbs 15:1-3 “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly but the mouth of the fools pours forth foolishness.†How many of you know that when you speak the truth foolishly it only brings foolishness. Or when you speak the truth harshly it only comes against a wall of anger. Yet when truth is spoken in love, softly, and with wisdom it has incredible power to bring the life of Christ and the goodness of God into people’s existences.
I leave you now with this; the power of our words is immense. Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongueâ€Â. Please use it as Paul teaches in 1Thessalonians 5:11 “comfort each other and edify one another†and in Romans 14:19 “Let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.â€Â
May God bless you all with his wisdom and grace. May He make us all worthy of his calling and finish our resolves for good and acts of faith by His power.
