In the “Purpose of the Bible†thread, Vic C said something that got me to wondering this:

Is the purpose of creation that the Lord wanted to have friends?

What do you think?

I don't recall what Vic said, but I would suggest that such a suggestion demonstrates a gross misunderstanding of the nature of God and the theology of the scriptures. In eternity past, before creation, God was already compete with "Friends." He had the other members of the trinity as "friends." God, even though he is one being, and one God, is three independent persons. The Son can pray to the Father, the Father can speak to the Son. Only God is one, and still not alone.

The purpose of creation is stated in Romans 9:23

23 and that he might make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy, which he afore prepared unto glory,

God wanted to reveal the "riches of his glory" upon those he chose to save. God desires not just the pleasure and enjoyment of the elect, but the pleasure and enjoyment of him. We were created to enjoy God, to marvel at the glory and wonder of his amazing attributes as he judges sin, and brings righteousness and goodness from evil.

I don’t believe in a Trinity, but even if I did, I would think the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (who I believe are the same being) would enjoy having friends. Jesus said we were his friends.

Understanding the Bible serves no purpose if it doesn’t lead you into a better relationship with the Lord.

Do you believe the scriptures? If you do, how do you explain all the scriptural data in which the independent persons of the one being called God function with their own personhood. Christ prayed to the Father, the Father spoke to the SON. Christ ascends to the Father, etc.

Or possibly you deny the full deity of Christ?

Elijah, I do not mean this in a nasty fashion and do not wish to raise the emotional level.... but you do realize that your are well outside orthodox christianity? Most of what I see you write is either Arian, Pelagian, or some other previous heresy.

On the other hand, a false understanding of scriptural doctrine will definitely lead to a relationship with a false Lord.

We’ve been asked not to debate the Trinity, I believe.

The goal is to have a relationship with the Lord.

As I said in my post on 12/22/2010....

Although I do believe in the Trinity and have no desire to debate this, I will say on Elijah`s behalf there are some that do fully believe in the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost but as just one person rather than 3. I think the United Penetecostal Church believes this as well as a few other groups. I think the debate is based on God calling Himself as One and Jesus saying He and God are One, but my understanding of "One" is probably more like your understanding Mondar but just to let you know some people do interpret "One" in a very strict sense. I can`t say if that is Elijah`s view but it very well could be.

To answer the question of friendship, that very well could be. We were created for God`s pleasure and companionship which could easily be defined as friendship. Unfortunately, I don`t think as a whole humans have turned out to be very good friends but like human to human relationships how many of us have a lot of really good, reliable friends? I mean friends that would literally lay down their lives for us and stick by us through thick and thin? Most of our friends are not that loyal but when we find one or two really true good friends, they are worth more than a mountain of gold. I think that must be God`s outlook. Humans as a whole aren`t that good, but when God finds a few faithful, loving followers it makes it all worth it to Him. And we become so priceless to Him, that He would send His Son to die for us.

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. -Ecclesiastes 12:13

The purpose of creation is to glorify the creator.

When human hands form an artwork; what is the purpose thereof? Not for friends, but for a work to magnify your will.

I think the Lord enjoys our fellowship.

I believe the Lord is more benevolent than that. Jesus said we were his friends, and I think Jesus is God.

Of course he didn't make mankind to have friends. Think of it like this god has always existed. So he has existed forever . Why would he suddenly want friends. We have no idea what he was up to before he created the earth and universe but I'm sure he wasn't bored. He's ways are beyond our understanding its just some thing us mere humans have to except.

Jesus did command us to love the Lord with all our hearts, minds, and souls.

Do you think the Lord has feelings?
