The Science of Salvation
Of course the title is a misnomer since salvation is built upon faith which has no measurable quantity to satisfy science. But then again God created everything so God is well aware that by placing faith above physical evidence he put himself at a disadvantage right from the beginning. But there is a logic to salvation, when one looks at scripture with a keen eye (meaning by the help of the Holy Spirit). There is a discernible correlation of events that must happen to facilitate salvation. To see this 'science of salvation' one must start with the baptism of Jesus Christ.
The important point of Jesus Christ's baptism is of course Christ receiving the Holy Spirit. Here you have Jesus Christ, who is God become man, with his own unique spirit receiving still another one, the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit didn't just tag along as a passenger for the bible reads that after Christ received the Holy Spirit he was led by this spirit into the wilderness.
In fact throughout Christ's ministry he depended on the Holy Spirit and made frequent references to it.
But the most important aspect of Christ receiving the Holy Spirit would come at his crucifixion. In the final moments of his agony on the cross Jesus Christ spoke and said,
Matthew 27:50 “And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. “
Luke 23:46 “Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.†When he had said this, he breathed his last.â€
John 19:30 “When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.†With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. “
This utterance by Jesus Christ on the cross of surrendering his spirit is very important. Jesus Christ gave up his own spirit but what about the Holy Spirit he received at his baptism? Where was it?
Jesus Christ is God become man and as such he already had his own unique spirit that had no beginning. One of the reasons why Jesus Christ had a virgin birth was that normal conception denotes a beginning of life. God has no beginning.
It is clear that when Jesus became sin for us he gave up his own spirit but retained the Holy Spirit. It was the presence of the Holy Spirit (as we Christians experience today of the Holy Spirit indwelling in us) in Jesus Christ that upon his death allowed Christ to be resurrected from the dead back into spirit and then to be reunited with God the Father in heaven.
The presence of the Holy Spirit is key to man's salvation as well. It takes the forgiveness of sin offered by Jesus Christ to receive the Holy Spirit. Then it takes the Holy Spirit to complete our redemption at the time of our death by resurrecting our spirit and leading it to heaven to be forever with God. But how does one get the Holy Spirit? By believing in Jesus Christ who is the first born of the dead and becoming one with his spirit in a marriage of faith, a spirit that has already been resurrected.
God Bless
note:
The simplicity of salvation shows that any complex man made ritual is utterly useless.
Jesus Christ had to have perfect faith in God. He trusted God the Father that once he gave up his own spirit the Holy Spirit that remained would bring his his body and soul back from the grave.
Before his crucifixion Jesus was the only person on earth who was sinless. Christ's virgin birth shielded him from man's original sin which man inherits from normal conception. Because Jesus Christ was sinless he wasn't under the condemnation of man's original sin which was death. Therefore Jesus Christ could have lived on this earth forever. Jesus Christ truly did give up his life on the cross for our sins.
Also note that aging is a consequence of man's original sin and since Jesus was sinless he didn't fall under the penalty of death and so he would not age.
Jesus Christ's lack of any noticeable aging due to his sinlessness must have weighed heavily on Satan who knew that eventually everyone would notice this aspect of Christ and begin to believe in his divinity. Satan knew that he must somehow try and bring an end to Christ's existence on earth. But Satan didn't understand the role of the Holy Spirit in bringing about the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the subsequent forgiveness of sin that Jesus Christ now offers to anyone who asks.
Our goodness, or lack of it, has no influence on our own spiritual resurrection upon death once we ask Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins for which we then receive the Holy Spirit.
Christian churches must begin to reinstate the forgotten practice of baptism. While the lost souls of this world scurry around seeking valueless pleasures to fulfill their wicked desires people of good faith should find comfort in the discipline of principled obedience such as baptism.
