I believe that it is VERY possible that these laws in Leviticus and Deuteronomy were man made laws to keep the people in line, or to keep them righteous. However, like many things humans get involved with, they went WAY overboard and claimed it to be from God. The same can be said for "destroying those infidels that sacrifice their babies". They justified their actions under the belief that their high priest was receiving orders directly from God. Yet, when it was a "Godless culture" that was more powerful then the Hebrews, there was no mention of "killing everyone of them". AND, when they noticed virgin girls, it was changed to allow them to be taken as "slaves".
I wouldn't be surprised if God was grieved by many of the actions of the Hebrews. :-?
