...The stones would cry out

Ever wondered what Christ meant in this verse in Luke 19:40: But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.â€

It was a reference to a prophecy that was being fulfilled as spoken by Daniel the Prophet.

"Know therefore and understand, That from the going forth of the command To restore and build Jerusalem Until Messiah the Prince, There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; Daniel 9:26

Messiah the Prince refers to the Messianic proclamation of the people when Jesus came into the city of Jerusalem, where they cried out Hosanna to the son of David, and laid palm branches down before Him. This event is celebrated even to this day as "Palm Sunday". Hosanna is a Messianic term from psalms 118 that means "save now"!

The priest's were angry with the people and asked Jesus to stop them because this was a reference to be made to YHWH.

This event marked the end of the 69th week!

Five days later, after the 69th week, Messiah was "cut off" on Passover.

26 "And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself;

Thanks a lot. Is does that refer to the 'stones would cry out' thing? What exactly are the 'stone'? That's what I'm trying to understand. Thanks

This is a good question. I think the context particularly speaks of Christian witness and evangelism,

"The disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen,
Saying, Blessed be the King that comes in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest,
And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said to him, Master, rebuke your disciples.
And he answered and said to them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out."

The Pharisees had tried to prevent the declaration of the coming of Christ. Jesus responds, as if foretelling, that if/when this does occur, that is... if the establishment do actually prevent the declaration of God to be told, and the Christian witness becomes silent, God would make these rocks cry out...

Who or what are these rocks? Well, they play a role in "declaring the coming of Christ", or establishing the doctrine of God.

Personally..., I think archeology and geology will become the incurable evangelist. The history of the stones will continue to tell of the glory of God even when God's people have ran out of voice. The stones will rise up and say what we are unable to say. There will continue to be discoveries that prove the biblical account and of creation. The stones will reveal a geological history that has been already planned by God. That's what I think anyway.

God Bless

Ah.... stones. Next to sundials, I can tell you a lot about stones. One time years ago before I used my real name, I even had handle regarding the name of a Stone. But I'll just state a few things here.

In the past, the Israelites carried a rock with them in the wilderness, this same Stone that gave then water (I Corinthians 10:4). This was none other than their father Jacob's Bethel stone (Genesis 28) that he anointed. It was symbolic of Christ (Yahshua), and was later on used in the coronation ceremonies of the Kings of Judah until this day. So had his own people not shouted Hosana, there would even be the day that the nations of His people would spread the gospel, being ruled under the Scepter.

In the spiritual sense, people in Christ Jesus are "Lively stones" who would bear light to His appearance, and the coming Kingdom.

There's no shortages of passages in the Scriptures about stone monuments Israel built, including the "waymarks" mentioned in Jeremiah as the lost house of Israel migrated (Stonehenge-like structures).

The Greatest is in Isaiah 19:19-20

In that day shall there be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at its border to the LORD....

The pillar is literally a "monument". The only thing that can be at the border and yet in the midst of Egypt is something standing at the border of the upper and lower Egypt which is geographically the Great Pyramid. And it's capstone is missing, being for some reason the chief cornerstone the builders rejected.

That gets into the subject of pyramidology and prophecy in stone.

Man.... the subject of stones is a fascinating one with me, and I can go on and on, but I have to get going right now. I'll come back later. But theres are the more obvious ones in scripture.

I find it interesting that the stones collected from the moon, venus, mars and mercury are all basalt rock. Basalt is a rock found on earth that is mostly produced under water. The entire crust under the oceans is made of basalt. Hawaii is made of basalt, but the lava is produced from a volcano thousands of feet under the ocean. Meteorites too are made of basalt. There is an unusual picture developing from the stones in space that doesn't sit well for the big bang...

Interesting scientific information. However, my knowledge of rocks I meant was more for their usage in the bible, rather than composition. The Rock the Israelites carried with them is described as "flinty rock". ( http://www.bible-history.com/isbe/F/FLINT/ ) But thanks for that side note.

The stones crying out was a reference to the people crying out Hosanna to the Son of David on that particular day.
The exact Day that these people laid palm branches before Him and cried Hosanna was the Day that marked the fulfillment of the 69th week.

If these people didn't come out on that very Day and proclaim Jesus as The Son of David [Prince] then the stones would have cried out Hosanna.

Daniels Prophecy of Messiah the Prince being fulfilled on the 69th week to the Day.

"Know therefore and understand, That from the going forth of the command To restore and build Jerusalem Until Messiah the Prince, There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; Daniel 9:25

Nothing was going to stop the Word of God from coming to pass.

A potentate's welcome; one way or another.

.
The event in question occurred as Jesus was entering the city of Jerusalem. The building material of choice in ancient times for permanent structures was stone. It's my guess the Lord referred to the big heavy blocks of the stuff stacked one on top of another in constructing the city's wall. It would have been amusing to watch the people's reaction had those big blocks started yelling out hosanna in unison. (chuckle) Everybody would have freaked out.
