The Time Has Come

Yes, the time has come for a new thread.
Here goes...

When does the Holy Spirit talk to us?
There has always been a dispute as to whether the Holy Spirit is actually talking to us or not.
How do we know the Holy Spirit is talking to us?
How do we know if the thoughts we have are coming from another source?

Some people make claims about the Holy Spirit and it just doesn't pan out.
There's a big Holy Spirit movement out there today.
But is it of God?

Some people claim they know the Holy Spirit so well that they only act when they hear him.
This is common.
But do they really hear the Holy Spirit to begin with?
How can we know for sure?

Anyone got anything on this?

I know there were a few times in my life that God spoke to me in such a way that it was like He was talking to me, just not audibly. In fact that's part of my testimony. I might not believe in God today if that didn't happen.
But that doesn't happen most of the time. At least not in my experience. In my experience God does things in His own time, not necessarily when you might want or expect Him to.

It would be potentially dangerous to assume that God always speaks to you through a voice in your head and wait for that voice in your head before doing anything.
Maybe that's why we're told to try the spirits and see if they're of God.

Looking back i see/hear the voice/hand of the Lord.. Hind sight is much clearer ...
I am skeptic of folks who say the Lord told me to tell you ... Or i heard this from the Lord... probably to a fault..

To add to my post, God is not some impersonal God that is all the way up in heaven while we're down here struggling. It's an actual relationship, as I'm sure we all know. Or at least I hope you do. God does communicate with us. It may not necessarily be "talking", though.

I'm having a hard time explaining exactly what I mean...

Through Scripture, and Scripture based thoughts on the subject of the Person and work of the Lord Jesus.

The only time I ever though I heard God talking to me, I was psychotic. And had a head injury. So, these days, I'm skeptical not only of others (I try to be nice about it), but also of myself.

God "talks" in many ways. My mom, she's a gardener, she used to have this plaque in one of her gardens: "God laughs through flowers." Something like that. So, like questdriven said, God can communicate to you in a number of ways, and most of them (thankfully) aren't as dramatic as Him talking to you.

I do find that the more I pray, the more receptive I am to things that I guess are *of* God, if not from God directly, if that makes any sense. People much wiser than me told me once that prayer is really about changing you so you're teachable, receptive, etc., so that makes a lot of sense.

That is what I was thinking about the relationship. Maybe the closer to the Lord you are the clearer the voice of the Holy Spirit is. Although someone could be drifting far from the Lord and the Holy Spirit could be loud and clear to get them back.

What I struggle with is the common idea that 'God told me to do such and such', when so often God's Word clearly reveals otherwise.

Has anyone ever, like, carried on a conversation with God? It's hard to explain what I mean, but like sometimes I'll talk to God the same way I'd talk to my best friend. And the feeling was similar to talking to someone physically there...y'know? Basically prayer, but not just praying about situations that need help or expressing thankfulness.

Yeah. That'd line up with my experience.

We have talked about the value of Bible based song lyrics also. Do you think that for example God speaks to you also though what you called worshipful experiences through heavy metal Christian songs, if the lyrics are Bible based?

Blessings.

God has spoken to me through songs before. Sometimes He'll use them to point things out to me.
Other times I pick out the message and apply it to my life without God necessarily pointing it out more directly.

This is the case with pretty much any Christian music I listen to.
