The Vicars of Christ: The Dark Side of the Papacy is a great book written by a Catholic.

Lets not forget the worst Pope to grace the throne: Benedict IX. Benedict was only 14 when he became pope and apparently out did all the other popes in sexual debauchery before he was even 16. One writer of the time said, "A demon from hell has occupied the throne of St. Peter" He was eventually bought off to leave the position.

And of course the anti-pope of 1415, John XXIII. He was accused of a council of rape, sodomy, and murder

Another pope was most likely a Satanist but I can't remember which one.

The period between the 10th and 14th centuries saw some of the worst popes ever. Part of this was the simple corruption of the faith of the Catholic church but the other part was the use of simony and the divine right of kings where most positions (even the pope for awhile) were appointed by the kings. This then means that many in the position were there solely as a political move and not religious reasons.

It is no wonder that you had such immortality in the church
