The Unforgiveable Sin

One who dies without having obeyed the gospel certainly has no hope and at the point of death it is indeed unforgiveable. Yet such is not the sin against the Holy Spirit under discussion in Matt.12 and Mark 3.

To never have heard is not to blaspheme, to have heard the word and deny it is to blaspheme...

Had the one like you say, that died not hearing the word, if he had may have turned around, but to "deny" the Gospel is to have "heard" the Gospel and reject it.

I have said nothing about "to never have heard is not to blaspheme--". Those scribes in the presence of Jesus had "heard". Mark 3:30 clearly says: "because they said, He hath an unclean spirit." Thats the sin, attributing the words, teachings and miracles of Jesus to an unclean spirit.

It appears to me that the unforgivable sin can only be committed by a Christian. When you become a believer you have the Holy Spirit testifying within you that Jesus is the way. The moment you begin saying there is another way you begin blaspheming the Holy Spirit by calling Him a liar. This is broken down in Hebrews 6:4.

Are those that blaspheme the Holy Spirit saying there is another way? My understanding is they attributed what Christ did to an unclean spirit. Today when someone commits that sin they blaspheme Christ in us as we speak as the Holy Spirit guides us.

They said that Jesus was doing His signs by the power of a demon. They where identifying the Holy Spirit as a demon.

They pointed to the signs and who was causing them to be done. They made the accusation that the Holy Spirit was a demon and they shall never be forgiven for doing it, Ever.

I agree. The lesson though is that the blasphemy continues today and didn't just address the scribes standing before Him.

.

In all three references to the unpardonable sin the context reveals Jesus was engaging with unbelievers. The language of Jesus in the context does not limit the possibility of committing this sin to either the believer or unbeliever.

They were religious men. They witnessed His work and yet attributed it to unclean spirits. They are as religious men today steeped in the letter of the Word and yet blind and deaf to the Holy Spirit speaking through others.

They were then and are today carnal.

2 Timothy 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

They didn't deny the Word for they were scribes...they live by the letter of the Word but they denied the Spirit of the Word...as they do today.

2 Corinthians 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

As they attributed what Jesus did to an unclean spirit...they blasphemed the Holy Spirit. Today, as the Spirit works through us...today's scribes and Pharisees continue to blaspheme the Holy Spirit in us.

I'm saying that in the verse you quoted Christ forgave them for blaspheming Him...but warned of a blasphemy that will not be forgiven if done. This is why I refer to Hebrews 6:4..as it later states that it would be like nailing Him to the cross again. Notice the word "again" as to show that this person was once a believer and accepted Christ.

As Jesus Christ IS God...He IS Father, Son and Holy Spirit. So, were they forgiven?

Jesus said....
Luke 12:9-10 But he that denieth Me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.

Is the "Son of man" in that passage referring to Him or...to those filled with the Holy Spirit, those He sends into the world?

Words can be spoken against the son of man by another and be forgiven....but when a son of man is teaching Words given him by the Holy Spirit (and others blaspheme the Holy Spirit within that son of man then)..."it shall not be forgiven him." He sends many sons of men into the world, filling them with the Holy Spirit.

Ezekiel 2:3 And He said unto me, Son of man, I send thee to the children of Israel, to a rebellious nation that hath rebelled against Me: they and their fathers have transgressed against Me, even unto this very day.

3:17 Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at My mouth, and give them warning from Me.

The scripture does not READ nor does scripture TEACH: "---but when a son of man is teaching Words given him by the Holy Spirit then--'it shall not be forgiven him' ".

I do not believe Jesus is The Father is The Holy Spirit.

I do however believe that Jesus made a few references to the unforgivable sin. He said that believers are the salt of the earth: Matthew 5:13 HCSB

"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It's no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled on by men."
Notice here again referring to believers that if we are to lose our taste...(how can it be made salty?) This very much sounds like the unforgivable sin. Also let us remember that there is only one unforgivable sin...so if Jesus is saying here that such a person can not be brought back then this must be it...as it lines up with other scriptures.

LOL...boy did I ever misstate that thought. I edited the original putting the new and improved in parenthesis. Sorry...I meant that when the Holy Spirit guides us we ARE to speak. Those saying we are guided by unclean spirits are those commiting the sin.

If someone is going to make the accusation that another is doing something by the power of a demon/demons they necessarily have to believe that demons exist.

So they must be a follower of some religious belief.

It is very rare that i ever witness someone blaspheme the Holy Spirit. When i do it makes me feel sick and i no longer want to have anything to do with the person. I have seen it done about 3 time on forums. :shame

In all my life I've seen it but once and it was on utube. I agree with you although I'm not sure demons exist on earth today as in the day of Jesus and His apostles. The devil certainly does. The sin is still possible to be committed today, although not to probable as not many attribute the works of Jesus to the devil.
