In December 1970, I wasn't quite 2 1/2 yet; we were at my grandparents house one day. I was standing in the dining room, and grandpa was in the living room with the older children (my brother and cousins); and he started to talk really loud and sternly. I started to cry; and my grandma knelt down behind me, and placed her hand on my shoulder.
She said grandpa wasn't really as mean or scary as I might be thinking; that I just didn't understand those other children had been naughty and he was scolding them. Then she said she wanted to share a secret with me; she said that when grandpa looked at her, every once in a while she would smile at him; and sometimes he would smile back at her. She suggested that I try that. When grandpa was done, and looked my way; I have a wonderful memory of him smiling at me.
