Growth The Veil

I was thinking about the Cross today and read several devotionals about the moment Jesus died and the Veil of the Temple was torn.

Mat 27:51 KJV And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

Apparently this veil/curtain was enormous ( ~ 60 feet high x 30 feet wide ) and possibly ~ 4 inches think and took 300 Priests to manipulate it ( according to Rabbinic Midrash etc ). This paints in my mind the enormity of this renting and also something else which I hadn't thought of before but read today.

When a Jew lost a Son he would often rent/tear his clothing and it's a terribly sad thought to imagine the anguish felt by the Father when His Son died that day and He tore His garment.

Heb 10:19-20 KJV Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, (20) By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

Thank you Lord Jesus for what you did for us we can never repay you.

Dear Brother Agua, the validity of the resurrection also evidenced by rocks rent, an earthquake, and many saints in the graves arising even convinced a Roman centurion that Jesus was truly the Son of God.

I think of the grief of the Father you also bring forth. When Jesus cried “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”, and yet that Father never failed or forsook Jesus, but He could not look upon our sin Jesus took unto Him for our sakes with the least amount of tolerance, and probably had to look away as His Son made the way open through the veil that had denied access to us prior to that.

I also think of David weeping for his beautiful son Absalom when he was killed, “O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son! Can we even begin to imagine the hurt our Father felt. Oh I’m sure we say we can but I believe only eternity will reveal these truths.

And then the heart of our Father that so loves the sinner that He would give us His only begotten Son watching Jesus who knew no sin become sin for us in the process that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

I also read of Jesus knowing of that to come and asking if there could be any other way, but willing to suffer for our sake makes the following hymn come to mind. Easter? I have no doubt we are probably so neglect in the totality of what all was accomplished at the cross, and it does bring tears when I delve into these things. Thank God for His immeasurable gift toward us which believe, and I’m thankful that regardless all the negativity surrounding this day of remembrance, Christ’s name is proclaimed throughout the world.

  1. “Man of Sorrows!” what a name
    For the Son of God, who came
    Ruined sinners to reclaim.
    Hallelujah! What a Savior!
  2. Bearing shame and scoffing rude,
    In my place condemned He stood;
    Sealed my pardon with His blood.
    Hallelujah! What a Savior!
  3. Guilty, vile, and helpless we;
    Spotless Lamb of God was He;
    “Full atonement!” can it be?
    Hallelujah! What a Savior!
  4. Lifted up was He to die;
    “It is finished!” was His cry;
    Now in Heav’n exalted high.
    Hallelujah! What a Savior!
  5. When He comes, our glorious King,
    All His ransomed home to bring,
    Then anew His song we’ll sing:
    Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Young's Literal Translation
Exo 26:31 `And thou hast made a vail of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and twined linen, work of a designer; he maketh it with cherubs;
Exo 26:32 and thou hast put it on four pillars of shittim wood, overlaid with gold, their pegs are of gold, on four sockets of silver.
Exo 26:33 `And thou hast put the vail under the hooks, and hast brought in thither within the vail the ark of the testimony; and the vail hath made a separation for you between the holy and the holy of holies.
Exo 26:34 `And thou hast put the mercy-seat on the ark of the testimony, in the holy of holies.

I see the veil as being the scales that were removed from Paul's eyes to see and understand that of the living Christ. Many, just as Paul before his conversion do many things in the name of God, but yet have that veil before them blinds their eyes as they truly do not know the risen Savior.

Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
