I have been listening to the KJV dramatized audio version of the Bible from biblegateway. A couple days ago I heard something that I never noticed before. I usually considered the Holy Spirit to be a rather quiet, in the background individual and never realized there were references to Him speaking in Scripture until I heard Acts 13:2 where it is recorded, As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, "Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them."

Are there other references to the Holy Spirit speaking in Scripture?

I believe we should read that with the understanding here.

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Kind of like when we speak, it is not really us speaking as Jesus testified of this when He had sent His disciples out across Israel in Matthew 10th chapter.

Matthew 10:19 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. 20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

So even here, when Jesus was on earth, the Spirit spoke for the Father. Now that Jesus has ascended, thee Spirit of Christ speaks for Christ as the Son is our Good Shepherd and Bridegroom.

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. 15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:....11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

So all the words, gifts, and fruits of the Spirit are from Jesus Christ as we are the work of His hands.

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.....20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

There's a passage in scripture (I forget exactly where)...where it read to me like the Father-Son-Holy Spirit, were having a conversation, all three of them...

Dang it, I wish I could remember where! Psalms, maybe? Hmmm :wall

2Sa 23:1 Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said,
2Sa 23:2 The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue.
2Sa 23:3 The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.

Eze_11:5 And the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me, and said unto me, Speak; Thus saith the LORD; Thus have ye said, O house of Israel: for I know the things that come into your mind, every one of them.

2Ch_24:20 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you.

I like the study of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament.
Even Saul was overcome by the Holy Spirit... He had no choice but to get in procession with the prophets and take off his Royal robe.

I realize that He speaks through others but this is the first reference I noticed where He spoke directly. I am wondering if there are other records like this.

And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. (Rev 22:17).

He can't speak directly. He can only speak through others.

He speaks what He hears is explaining that He does not speak His own words.

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. KJV

Compare the KJV with other four versions as they testify to the same thing at this link at Bible Gateway.

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John 16:13&version=KJV;ESV;TLB;NIV;NASB

The Spirit of truth is meaning being the Spirit of Jesus Who is the Truth.

The Spirit of the Lord is meaning that the Spirit is conveying words from the Lord.

He can't speak directly. He can only speak through others.
Scripture does not allow for such a dogmatic position on how the Holy Spirit speaks. Indeed the Spirit speaks expressly as follows (1 Tim 4:1-3):

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

That is still with the understanding that the Spirit is expressing words from Another as in Christ.

Scripture cannot go against scripture; the truth in one scripture cannot go against any testimony shared in another part of scripture that would decline from the testimony and the glory of the Son. That is one way to know if a Bible version did their job right.

The Holy Spirit speaks for Christ in order for Him to glorify Christ. There is no partiality in His service as the Spirit of Christ now since Jesus has ascended to Heaven in how the Son is keeping His promises to us in being with us always.

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth....20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

The Holy Spirit can never speak as the Spirit of the Spirit.

Here's a site with many of those type of conversations and one of them is Psalms 40:6-10 that you might be thinking of

These are a few I found:
Act 8:29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.

Act 10:19 While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.
Act 10:20 Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.

Act 11:28 And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.

Act 21:11 And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.
Act 21:12 And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem.

Explain Romans 8:26-27 if you all would please, if you really believe the Holy Spirit can stop speaking for Another and just speak of His own accord.

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

At this link is the Strong's Concordance to the King James Bible in looking up the Greek words & meaning.

http://www.sacrednamebible.com/kjvstrongs/index2.htm

In Romans 8th chapter on verse 26, the last tow Greek words in the Greek texts are coming with these meanings.

The Greek word, "stenagmos" is defined as "from stenazw - stenazo 4727; a sigh:--groaning."

The Greek word "alaletos" is defined as "from a - a 1 (as a negative particle) and a derivative oflalew - laleo 2980; unspeakable:--unutterable, which cannot be uttered."

That means the sighing or the groaning is not being uttered at all; hence no sound.

That leads to verse 27 in how the One that searches our hearts which is Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. 14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

He is the One that knows the mind of the Spirit, and that is how the unspeakable intercessions of the Spirit are made known to the Father because Jesus presents the Spirit's unspeakable intercessions for Him.

This is to the will of God because there is only One Mediator between God and men

1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

This is set up this way because when the Son presents our intercessions and the Spirit's unspeakable intercessions to the Father, when the Father says "Yes" to any intercession, the Son answers the prayer so that the Father may be glorified in the Son for answered prayers.

John 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

So if the Holy Spirit can speak for Himself, why can't He gives His own prayers Himself in spite of His intercessions being unspeakable?:thinking

When this was written...

Acts 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:...

Was it really Peter speaking or the Holy Spirit in him speaking? We understand what is being written in respect to other scripture.

Matthew 10:19 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. 20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

So when you cite scripture about what the Spirit says, it should be with this understanding.

That is how the Holy Spirit glorifies the Son as our Good Shepherd by relaying His words to us. He cannot speak in any other way in deferring from that glory of the Son.

Jesus said he had to go back to the Father so that the helper, the Holy Spirit would come. He would would come to convict the world of its sin, and God' righteousness and of coming coming judgement. The,worlds sin is that it refuses to beleive in me. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. All that belongs to the Father is mine, this is why I said The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.

John 16: 5-15

In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit came upon. In the New Tetemant the Holy Spirit comes within. A deposit of our inheritance, the voice of God within our very soul, our very being.

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
Amen!

The Holy Spirit in Acts, gives Commandments (1:2), gives Power (1:8), speaks (1:16), fills Believers (2:4), is poured out (2:18), is received (2:33), is a Gift (2:38), discerns lies (5:3), can be tempted (5:9), witnesses (5:32), gives wisdom (6:3), gives Faith (6:5), can be resisted (7:51), gives direction (8:29), comforts (9:31), speaks (10:19), anoints (10:38), falls on people (11:15), baptizes (11:16), signifies (11:28), sends (13:4); and in John, convicts and reproves (16:8), guides into all Truth (16:13), glorifies Christ (16:14), etc.

Pastor Jimmy Swaggart bible commentary (the book of Acts) says, "Even though we have only given some of the things He does, I think we have given enough to make our point."

WIP,

In the example of Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch, there is this statement, 'And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot"' (Acts 8:29 ESV).

I think this is another example of the Holy Spirit speaking.

One of the problems I face today in getting the clear voice of the Spirit to direct me is the possibility of my confusing his voice with my own voice. The subjectivity of the voice often causes me to be wary of knowing how to differentiate the two voices.

However, Philip acted on the Spirit's voice and the surrounding verses in Acts 8 confirm the accuracy of the Spirit's voice.

WIP,

I've located another example.

Agabus the prophet stated, according to Acts 21:11 (ESV), 'And coming to us, he took Paul's belt and bound his own feet and hands and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘This is how the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles'".

It's never a good idea to place God in a box. We are dealing with the Mystery of God. The Holy Spirit speaks BOTH on behalf of the Father, and of the Son, and also on behalf of Himself. Scripture teaches us to pray TO the Father THROUGH the Son and BY the Holy Ghost. Christ intercedes for us while the Holy Spirit prays for us and with us.

Agabus said that to make it clear that he was not the one that was speaking.

Scripture elsewhere says that the words the Holy Spirit are saying are not His own words, but from Christ's.
