The wage

Poverty is a social issue, not a personal problem per se; "The personal is political."

I agree that there is a noticable portion of our society that spends its money on escapist substances, but the problem is a separate issue from the wage. A person with a pill problem is the same whether they are making 1 dollar or 100 dollars an hour.
I know of millioniares that only have that money because of parents and they blow it up their noses. livers and arms.

This is probably because they have no idea or need to manage their money.

Some of my friends I keep in contact told me about the pay raise. However most of my former coworkers went from 8hr shifts to 6 hr shifts. Or 8 hr shifts but a 3hr unpaid lunch break that took up about 2 hrs of the shift. :tongue
I can see that.

Entry level pay is entry level for a few reasons.. not all of them are to make the business owner rich...

Sure, but when we talk about walmart, it has a long history of shady ways on how it keeps wages low yet how it demands a fully dedicated work force. We can hold an opinion on the ethical choices of a business and not demand the business do anything.

My daughter in law and 2 kids work for walmart... They do not complain they like their jobs and the way the store accommodates their shifts for the ease of getting to work..
Safety standards i can understand ...

Are they the sole income providers to their homes, or is she supplementing her spouse's income? Its a major difference, I worked at Walmart for 6 years and had several promotion, but I was the head of household and even with my promotions my wage kept getting cut and my hours kept shrinking, even with good reviews. I left the company making 7.75 an hour and working 10 hour shifts, but having to take 3 hr lunch breaks, after 6 years I had enough of the money games.

There is a chance that she had a good store manager, but I've worked under 6 only 1 of them actually care about running the store more than using it as a stepping stone up the corporate ladder.

I left because no one can support themselves on a Walmart wage alone.

The kids live with mom... :) but they are not the topic..
An employees living arrangement is not the business of the employer...

using my family and walmart as examples here...
Granddaughter chose not to go to art school... walmart did not choose that for her.. she is not held captive at wallyworld.
My personal view wallyworld would be a good entry level job and a good one for a student... for life? nope ..set your self to move on
Grandson... will be 20 this summer not a bad job for a kid... Hope he moves on
both these kids have GEDs because mom home schooled them .. that was not wallyworlds choice it was moms. Now at this age it is their choice to not put some college under their belts...

Walmart is not accountable for their choices..

Good post reba. These jobs are very good for people in specific circumstances in life, but they generally are NOT career jobs. They are entry level or temporary jobs.

My son worked picking tobacco here in Connecticut when he was 14, later he worked as a busboy for a bbq place, then as an intern for an insurance company, then (while earning an engineering degree) worked as an intern for a military electronics company, and then fresh out of engineering school took a full-time job at Intel where he is now a principal engineer.

That kind of career path is what we typically think of as working your way up and there is definitely a place for the low-wage entry level jobs along the way. He did not stay picking tobacco or busing tables and complain about the low wages. He improved his skills, became more valuable to employers, and moved on.

Wages are not set on what it takes to live - wages are largely determined by your value to the company.

Also, if you have skills that are rare, you can sometimes get a bit more money even tho your value isn't THAT great in dollars.

My point, is that it is simply NOT about what it costs you to live - and it is up to YOU to make yourself worth more. I have spent SO MUCH of my life learning and training myself - and my reward is that I have never been out of work in the 36 years since I left high school.

One more thing - you will NEVER make as much money as you will working for yourself. In any job, part of the income you generate goes to the person who took the risk of setting up the business -take the risk and if it pays off -you willl be rewarded.

ok and that is good. you are of that era but lets be real. if im married and I am should I have Nathan and monica and jaci all in my house?

I also will use a statement by medina whom is hardly uneducated nor lives in a poor community. if we continue talking about home depot and its wages, I will get mad. what I don't get is the amount of Billioniares in this county and the idea of them against welfare and so forth which I hate and them not wanting to pay a wage that I don't have to use them. I add this to that statement and yet head to city hall /county commission crying for some break on taxes or some payout in the form of a favor (usually). welfare to the poor and the rich is the same and as bad.

not that I disagree but being where I am at. stuck my options are :
1) shaft the bank and let it take my home.
2) in that process move to place where I could make more and buy a home seven years later.
3) stay where im at and commute thus negating any raise in pay.
4) wait on god, which is the current option.

vero beach. home of the newly wed and NEARLY DEAD. retirement communities aren't often the place to raise a family on a decent wage. this town and county have fought progress which is for another thread , as such I have mixed feelings as I have been on both sides of the arguments.

Wages are not set on what it takes to live - wages are largely determined by your value to the company.
And your value to yourself. The company doesn't determine wages entirely alone. They can only do so as long as they can find people willing to do the work for the compensation they offer. I think too often in our society today we think we have zero control over our own compensation packages. When unemployment goes low like it is now, it's a worker's market. Employers are struggling to find help and this can force them to sweeten up their offers if applicants as a group are willing to stand their ground.
