You ever hear of how in times of wars past how the military used code talkers so the enemy could not figure out what they were saying? Much in the same way many of Gods spoken words by the prophets, apostles, disciples, and even Jesus were spoken in a mystery.

Paul said in 1 Corinthians 2:7 “But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:” I see a lot of people who struggle with many of the symbolisms in scripture, like the book of Revelation, and many other symbolic prophetic parts of scripture.
This I believe is because they do not have the mind of wisdom given to us by the Holy Spirit of God to understand the many mysteries contained in many parts of scripture. Paul called it the wisdom of God, meaning it comes from God, and not from man.

This understanding is not given to everyone who reads and studies the Bible, but only to those whom the Lord has chosen to reveal these mysteries to. Jesus said Mark 4:11 “And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:”

God plainly said he spoke by the prophets in similitudes in Hosea 12:10 “I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.” It is written in Psalm 78:1-2 “Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:” And also as Solomon who was given the Spirit of wisdom by God said in Proverbs 1:5-6 “A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.”

Jesus as well spoke in similitudes, parables, and dark sayings…. Mark 4:30 And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it? Matthew 13:34-35All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.”

Why do you suppose the Lord decided to speak in this way?

The why is not a mystery He tells them and us

Mat 13:10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?
Mat 13:11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
Mat 13:12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
Mat 13:13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
Mat 13:14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
Mat 13:15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
Mat 13:16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.
Mat 13:17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

Gods Word speaks without ending. That's part of the Mystery. And Gods Word speaks to unseen agents and powers, which can be quite a mystery to the natural mind, because the natural mind is "subject" to those powers and agents.

I always keep this in mind when I witness of God in Christ to the unsaved.

Mark 4:
15 And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.

We do not witness to only one party. We are in fact witnessing to TWO parties in TWO entirely different ways. For the person, I seek or witness to secure them with the Love of God in Christ to them. And to the other, forthcoming damnation. Securing Gods Love in Christ to the person, should God in Christ Honor the witnessing with His Presence in the person, will enable the person with the tools to fight against their own adversary in the flesh.

When God speaks in parables/similitudes His Word is connecting the bridge between our natural mind and the unseen. We know for example a person is not a literal wheat/sheep NOR are tares just weeds, but unseen evil entities in the same ground. The sheep and the goats are in fact in the same herd, even in the same flesh. Same with the wheat and tare, growing together in the same earth, our own clay.

The short version is that one, should God allow, will see, and the other will not and will resist Gods Words.

The mysteries come easily to those who are opened to hear what the Holy Spirit (not man apart from the Holy Spirit) is speaking and gives us all wisdom and understanding.

Very good, I like it when someone supports their beliefs based on the words of God. :)

Do you believe it is more because one is "open to hear" that we hear, or perhaps more about being given "ears to hear" what the Spirit is saying by God?

People believe what they want to believe.

Luk 16:31 - And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

On trivial matters, even Christians with itchy ears hear what they want to hear.

We are given Spiritual ears to hear that of the Holy Spirit that gives us wisdom and understanding if we are truly indwelled with the Holy Spirit and hear His voice. Those who can not understand the mysteries of God's word as Jesus spoke the mysteries in parables are those who have not the Spirit of God dwelling in them as it is only when we seek truth through the Holy Spirit will our spiritual eyes and ears be opened to the wisdom and knowledge of the Holy Spirit teaching us all things God wants us to learn, Matthew 13:9-13, John 14:26.
