The Wrath Of God

I'm torn. Hell is real. Its...kind of a big deal. But God's love and mercy is huge. We love Him because He first loved us. Which should be emphasized, and at what times?
Both, simultaneously.

Steve Brown once stated that "A preacher should not preach about hell without a tear in his eye"; he also stated that "Before a person hears the Good News of the saving grace of the Gospel, it is necessary to first tell the person the bad news of the reality of Hell.

One of the greatest sermons preached/written is "Sinners in the Hand of an Angry God" by Jonathan Edwards. I recommend you read it. It should be on line.

275 years ago tomorrow, Jonathan Edwards preached Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God in Enfield, Connecticut, just a few miles from here.

"Their foot shall slide in due time." - Deuteronomy 32:35.
WOW!
I did not see this until after I posted, recommending the same thing.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Wrath of God is presented in various ways. There is temporal wrath, in the here in now variety. And there is wrath to come, of the pre final judgment variety.

The wrath of God in the here and now, of the temporal variety, is well demonstrated in the O.T. But these demonstrations are not of the "wrath to come" variety. They are pictures however of that wrath to come.

Luke 3:7
Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

The wrath that God did, and continues to demonsrtate I might add, is in the temporal arena.

Romans 1:18
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

If we do not see or perceive this kind of wrath we simply are not looking. It is revealed quite openly.

But there is a heightened and horrible wrath that is on the event horizon, ever closer, of course.

Romans 9:22
What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:

We might say that it is only the longsuffering patience of God Himself that is being demonstrated presently. But that does not preclude wrath in the here and now variety, which can be seen. Some preachers, such as the Westboro baptist variety, sees Gods wrath in the here and now by our soldiers being killed in foreign lands because of homosexuality allowed here, and uses that as a warning to people.

I'm not saying they are afar off in that sight. But this is not the "wrath to come" variety.

The wrath of God is also demonstrated in the here and now, to disobedience of believers:

Ephesians 5:
5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them.

Understanding the wrath to come starts here:

Revelation 6:17
For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

It is also preambled in the O.T. many places, such as here:

Malachi 3:2
But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:
3 And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.

If you are a priest (and king) of Christ, which all as believers are, and that time comes, you WILL be purified. And that purification will come by wrath.

Rev. 6:
9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;

13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?
14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

There is a fear of God that we all should have, but what type of fear should it be and what type of fear might it be?

We should fear the Lord our God as a loving Father.

Gal 3:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

So by faith in Christ Jesus we are all sons. And you don't destroy a son, but might reprove a son. Still not all have faith in Jesus Christ. To them there comes a day of judgment.

Now that day and the judgment needs to be explained. I've heard that Jesus talk more and hell than any other recorded in the Bible. Certainly that explanation might and should create a fear so that people turn to God, which is what we are trying to do. So we might create that type of fear in them but it is not our purpose to create that type of fear. Our purpose is to turn people to God by making them aware.

So I wonder about anyone too focused on the fear/wrath of God without mentioning the love of God. I am all for it being used in preaching, but if that is the subject and not knowing the Lord for His love, isn't something missing?

Nahum wrote: [Nah 1:2 NASB] 2 A jealous and avenging God is the LORD;The LORD is avenging and wrathful. The LORD takes vengeance on His adversaries,And He reserves wrath for His enemies.

But Nahum also wrote: Nah 1:7 The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble,And He knows those who take refuge in Him

Nahum knew the Lord and was trying to get people to turn to a loving God. That was his purpose. He wasn't just trying to create a fear, but was trying to get people to turn to a loving God and avoid the wrath of God.

So let us not forget our purpose is get people to seek a loving wonderful God, when we talk about the wrath of God.

I see where turnorburn wrote:

We understand that the good news is that we can have a personal relationship with God who is love, right?

What is John saying here?

Matthew 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

In our generation who is warning sinners to flee from the wrath to come?

God and the kingdom of God warns people, but people usually don't actually listen with their spiritual ears. John the Baptist realized this problem so he asked the question, "who has warned you to flee from the wrap to come?"

It's a question meant to get some people to consider who was trying to get them to repent.

Rom 10:18 But I say, surely they have never heard, have they? Indeed they have; "Their voice has gone out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world."

God and His kingdom try to tell people to turn to God, and of course we know we are also asked to help also, just as John was. So we might use the coming wrath of God to get those not willing to listen to the Lord our God to turn to God. However the important part is getting them to seek our loving God, and not that unbelievers will come under wrath. So John also said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." (Jn 1 : 29)

So the message is not the wrath of God but the salvation of God (Jesus - Yeshua - God's Salvation) That is to say that they can get to know God's salvation (Jesus). And God so loved the world He gave is only begotten Son. And He said that He stands at the door and knocks and if anyone hears His voice and opens the door He will come in and eat with them. Thus pointing out the wrath that will come on those unwilling to seek the faith is just a tool we use to convert unbelievers and not our message.

Every so often I come across a person that says they don't want to know a God that will throw people into hell.

That bothers me, because it means it is also possible to use the coming wrath of God to drive people away from Jesus! So we must preach heaven and hell!!! We must make it clear that God does not want any to perish, and has given all people the option to choose good or evil. So it is not God who is evil, but their own choice and their own decision to not listen to a loving God who wants to give them life eternal in heaven. Still, a loving God can not have continual rebellion, and especially not in heaven. So they need to show some inclination to turn from their evil way and seek our loving God.

So I might suggest that people are not so much turning from the wrath of God, but rather are fleeing the wrath of God by their turning to Love (Jesus Christ) of God.
