1 Corinthians 6:9-11
Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Galatians 5:19-21
The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Ephesians 5:3-5
But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy personâ€â€such a man is an idolaterâ€â€has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

I believe in the Once Saved Always Saved doctrine, which applies to true Christians who do not willfully and persistently sin. But what happens to habitual sinners the bible describes : the sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, homosexual offenders, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, slanderers, swindlers, those guilty of idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like .....

The Bible says they will “ not inherit the kingdom of God†–-- but what exactly does this mean? If they had professed to be Christians all their lives, will such sinners still go straight to hell for their willful sins? But that would be as good as not being a Christian at all ? Will they at least get another chance for repentance? Is there biblical basis for what exactly would happen to them ?

:angel2

I always like to look at the section that deals with what we will call more acceptable social sins. Its easy to read about sexual sin and agree and shake our heads in self righteousness, but what about:

Galatians 5:19-21
The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: hatred,............ discord,............. jealousy,................. fits of rage,.................. selfish ambition,.................. dissensions,........... factions (a group of people connected by a shared belief or opinion within a larger group. eeeew, that means...denominations !) and envy;................. drunkenness,

So now the playing field is more even. :) God places the jealous next to the prostitute. He also places the person that is driven in their career (selfish ambition) next to the sexually immoral like a homosexual . He places those who gets angry with one another, next to the witches.Same with those who causes discord among us. But the one that seems to cover most would be factions. None of these would enter into the kingdom. Now that is getting scary.

If we look in the KJV or NKJV Bible ... the word " heresies" is used , .. not "factions" .
Nothing to do with denominations.

Galatians 5:19-21

KJV
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

NKJV
Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

.

Lets look at the word in Greek then:

HERESY - "In ancient Greek, the verb 'hairein,' meaning 'to take,' gave rise to the adjective 'hairetos' 'able to choose' and the noun 'hairesis' 'the act of choosing.' In time the noun developed the extended senses of 'a choice,' 'a course of action,' 'a school of thought,' and 'a philosophical or religious sect.' Stoicism, for example, was a 'hairesis.'

Within Judaism, a 'heresy' (our modern English equivalent and derivative of 'hairesis') was a religious faction, part, or sect, such as the Pharisees or Sadducees. Applied to such groups, 'hairesis' was used in a neutral, nonpejorative manner. In fact, when this Greek noun is used in the New Testament, it is usually translated as 'sect.' When the prosecutor Tertullus charged St. Paul with being the ringleader of 'the sect of the Nazarenes,' implying that Christianity was simply another party within Judaism, Paul responded: 'But this I confess to thee, that according to the way, which they call a heresy, so do I serve the Father and my God.' (Acts 24:14, Douay)

When St. Paul used the term 'hairesis' in a Christian context, its meaning was pejorative, designating a splinter group within the Christian community that threatened the unity of the Church.

So the original meaning is a splinter group, a party, which includes a denomination.

G139
αἵÃÂεÃιÂ
hairesis
hah'ee-res-is
From G138; properly a choice, that is, (specifically) a party or (abstractly) disunion. (“heresy†is the Greek word itself.): - heresy [which is the Greekord itself], sect.

Lets look at another person writing about the same thing:
Heresy is the translation of the Greek hairesisâ€â€meaning literally "choice" or "selection"â€â€which has an interesting secular as well as biblical history. Until its biblical use, it had no evil connotation. Even in the Bible, it is mostly used to refer to a party or a philosophy with which a person had chosen to identify or ally himself. Thus, hairesis is frequently translated "sect." In Acts, Luke applies it to the Sadducees (Luke 5:17) and the Pharisees (Luke 15:5; 26:5). Outsiders also used hairesis in Acts 24:5, 14 and Acts 28:22 to identify the Christian church.

However, when Paul and Peter's writings began circulating, hairesis meant a destructive element within the church that creates division through consciously formed opinions and ideas in disagreement with the orthodox teachings of the apostles. Paul condemns it in Galatians 5:20 as one of "the works of the flesh." Sometimes it is translated "factions" or "party spirit," but regardless of its translation, Paul says that people who practicesuch things will not inherit the Kingdom of God (verse 21)!

Sects are Denominations :

Sects:
1. A group of people forming a distinct unit within a larger group by virtue of certain refinements or distinctions of belief or practice.
2. A religious body, especially one that has separated from a larger denomination.
3. A faction united by common interests or beliefs.

The Bible means exactly what it says.

  • Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; KJV

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world,
and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: KJV

Romans 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners,
so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

Good point, Tina. The larger group is the denomination, the smaller group within that denomination, which usually falls away, is the faction.

Example are; SDA, a denomination and the faction would be the Davidian Branch or... the Mormons (for the sake of example only, they could ce considered a sect themselves) and the groups formed by Jeffrey Lundgren and the one formed by Warren Jeffs. Harold Camping was once a Baptist. I'd consider his ministry a sect or faction. Jehovah's Witness and Christian Science are sects also.

Today's sects tend to deviate from the basic tenants of Christianity, unlike the sects of years gone by.

Tina, these are my thoughts on this matter and there may be many who disagree. I think the key word is REPENTANCE. Our Lord judges our heart. Each of us (Christians and unbelievers) are going to sin everyday. However as Christians who know the Word of God and the price that Christ has paid for us we should be truly sorry for each of these sins. If someone is a professing Christian all of their life and is WILLFULLY sinning and is un-repentant, I would have to doubt their faith in Christ. Obviously though I am not their judge. Matthew 15:8-- This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. (KJV)

The free gift of justification and the inheritance are two distinct qualities that are united in one.

Those who are justified receive, in this world, the engagement gift of the earnest of the inheritance, the earnest of the Spirit; whereby they are sealed until the day of the redemption of the body.

Since the OP was concerning those who will not inherit the kingdom of God, the essential truth is that those who are not freely justified will not inherit the kingdom of God.

First, "Hallowed be your Name"--- this is justification before the judgment bar of God.

Second, "Your kingdom come..." this is the inheritance.

Those who are given the first gift of justification are also given the second gift of the earnest of the inheritance of the kingdom, in this present evil world. The full gift of the inheritance is given at the appearing of our Lord Jesus.

Well we have Google and we can look up definitions ! :)

Denomination Meaning and Definition

1. (n.) That by which anything is denominated or styled; an epithet; a name, designation, or title; especially, a general name indicating a class of like individuals; a category; as, the denomination of units, or of thousands, or of fourths, or of shillings, or of tons.
2. (n.) A class, or society of individuals, called by the same name; a sect; as, a denomination of Christians.
3. (n.) The act of naming or designating.

The Biblical word that we know as heresy, does not mean "to preach something other than the gospel" it means so have splinter groups that are not part of the main Body of Christ,, because they disagree with each other. So they form their own church or ........denomination.That is heresy. Why? Because we divide that which cannot be divided: Christ.

1Co 1:11 For it hath been signified unto me concerning you, my brethren, by them that are of the household of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
1Co 1:12 Now this I mean, that each one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos: and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
1Co 1:13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized into the name of Paul?

If Paul had left them alone, they would have had the Paulists denomination and the Cephasites denomination (how human :yes ) but later, we went that way anyway. What else ! We still think the same way that they did? If we disagree, lets break up. I take my bags and I will build a new building and give it the name that reinforces my belief. People think like this: " I teach the FULL gospel , so I will call my church the FULL GOSPEL , so that you will know in future, that YOU DO NOT.
" or since we baptize and you do not, I will start my own denomination and just to prove to you that I am right, I will even call us 'THE BAPTISTS" to make sure you get the point, that WE BAPTIZE !!!

Its all heresy in God's eyes.

Ok let me give an example. I know a guy who is divorced, living in fornication, but he's a devout Christian who loves the Lord. He insists that all he has to do to enter Heaven one day is to repent on a daily basis .... Does it work that way ?

What happens if he dies suddently without one last chance of repentance ?

Actually it's the same with many Christian gays too, they think God will accept their last minute repentance.

How on earth is it ever possible to be "perfectly united in mind and thought" ? ....

You seemed to have a very warped and narrow view of denominations. Did it ever occur to you that these days, unlike the past, new churches spring up under various denominations because of different EMPHASIS on doctrines, not because of quarrels or disagreements ... ??

Had some hellfire there. Scared the... out of me. :praying :study :praying
Here's another one you might like. 1 Corinthians 9:27  But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
This is an example of someone that gets in by the skin of their teeth.
1 Corinthians 3:11  ¶For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
12  Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
13  Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
14  If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
15  If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
Works burned, no rewards... still saved, because the foundation is Christ. P.S. I do believe there is such a thing as going beyond even losing all rewards... Apostasy.
I think some Christians need some encouragement though, don't you. Maybe give me a confidence builder.
Romans 14:17  For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
18  For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.
19  Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another. :verysad :shame :praying :amen

Sometimes I wish you will give some spacing between your lines, especially after scripture verses, so that it will be easier to read your posts .... :rolleyes2

Just after 1 Corinthians 3:11-15 you quoted above, this is what Paul said in verses 16-17 :

"Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are."

What exactly do you think constitutes "defiling" of the body - the temple of God , that God "will destroy him" ?

:chin

In your opinion, what is the "main Body of Christ" ?
My opinion does not count. Let rather see what God sees as the body of Christ.

Would you agree, that we see our walk as a walk WITH God? So the Bible says:
Amo 3:3 Shall two walk together, except they have agreed? So it seems if we want to walk with God, we must agree with Him. So the body of Christ are those who are in agreement with the Word of God.

Just before these verses, this is what Paul said : " I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought."

:confused
When you agree with God , you are in unity of mind and thought. The Word of God is the only truth and when we add or subtract, we add our opinions and that causes divisions (denominations)

You seemed to have a very warped and narrow view of denominations. Did it ever occur to you that these days, unlike the past, new churches spring up under various denominations because of different EMPHASIS on doctrines, not because of quarrels or disagreements ... ??

:shame

We are not allowed to do that. We are only to preach the gospel as we first received it from the Apostles through the Bible.

1Co 15:1 Now I make known unto you brethren, the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye received, wherein also ye stand,
1Co 15:2 by which also ye are saved, if ye hold fast the word which I preached unto you, except ye believed in vain.

You will see that Paul mentions the fact that we can in fact believe in vain (contrary to what some denominations teach ) Can you see the little conditional word there : if

So if a denomination do not preach the truth exactly like Paul did, they might be believing in vain. Now I am sure that is something that no Christian would want, because it has a direct impact on our eternity.

Well, I think the reason Paul wrote this letter in the first place is because he had a specific sin in mind.
1 Corinthians 5:1  ¶It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.
2  And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
3  For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,
4  In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
5  To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
By the way, this young man was later forgiven.
2 Corinthians 2:5  ¶But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.
6 Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.7  So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.8  Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.

I am not quiet sure which scripture you are referring to in relation to what you have written ? :)

Your previous question was ... what is defiling the temple of God? Paul answers the main reason he wrote the letter was the sin of the young man living with his father's wife... who was later forgiven.
Anyway Tina, I was just checking out a new post area. This whole theme is just too condemnatory for me. All of us sin. The scriptures are full of condemnation against sin. There are no perfect Christians, you included. Right now I think I need some edification scripture, instead of weighty stuff like this.
By the way here is something for you to think on... which is a mystery to me. Every Patriarch in the old testament had multiple wives. Yet God spoke well of their faithfulness. In the new testament Christ says because of the hardness of their hearts he allowed them have more than one wife, but in the beginning it was not so. God speaks of how Abraham would rule his house well, how David had a heart after the Lord, etc. The only thing I can see different between them and fornication today is... they kept all their wives... instead of divorcing them.It baffles me that on one hand in the new testament it is considered enough to send a person to hell... and in the old testament they are practically lauded for their ability to procreate. ??? Figure that one. Also in the new testament Hebrews 11... they are called men of faith. :chin

Eph 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beseech you to walk worthily of the calling wherewith ye were called,
Eph 4:2 with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
Eph 4:3 giving diligence to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Eph 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as also ye were called in one hope of your calling;
Eph 4:5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
Eph 4:6 one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in all.

Surely we must see that when we split up into groups, we divide the Body of Christ? Why does it seem that Christians prefer this split and do not even try to get together anymore?

Why must I defend unity ?

Why does it seem that you think I am wrong for saying that we should not be divided? when the Bible itself is so very, very clear that we must do all we can to stay together in peace ?

Eph 4:14 that we may be no longer children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error; (denominations)
Eph 4:15 but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, even Christ;
Eph 4:16 from whom all the body fitly framed and knit together through that which every joint supplieth, according to the working in due measure of each several part, maketh the increase of the body unto the building up of itself in love.

Why do we love our denominations doctrine more than we love the simple Word of God?

By the way I don't like your definition of heresy. It is simply self-chose doctrines or basically pet theories that are not Biblical. Sometimes in the search for the perfect Hebrew or Greek word we screw up the definition even more. I don't use Hebrew and Greek because I am not a scholar. People that do oftentimes mess up the syntax anyway. Stick to the King James. If you want a real scholar in Hebrew and Greek go watch David Hockings. He is thoroughly trained in both. Quoting off some Greek word doesn't mean a thing if you don't understand context and syntax.

It not a question of what we like or dislike. Its also not my definition. I gave also provided scriptures which backs this up, so its not even my opinion. I have placed this in Biblical context.

By the way, you are giving me your definition here, which is only based on what you perceive it to be. :)
