Jesus told us to repent. That means we are to stop sinning.

From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Matt 4:17 RSV

Some Christians say repentance is unnecessary.

Others change the meaning of the word “repent.â€

When you stop sinning, your life becomes a paradise. It serves no purpose to disobey this command.

Repent means to turn away from sin not stop sinning. It's not possible for us to stop sinning. If we could, we wouldn't need our Savior.

No, “repent†means to stop sinning, in this context. To “turn from sin†means to stop sinning.

We have all sinned, and therefore we need Jesus, but Jesus commanded us to stop:

When we do so, our problems disappear and life becomes a paradise.

Elijah,

Love ya like a brother, but - Life will only be a paradise when EVERYONE stops sinning. ;)

It is a minor inconvenience when someone else sins. Our real torment comes when we experience the consequences of our own sin. Love you, too, Pizzaguy.

If the sin is rape, murder or theft, it goes beyond inconvenience.

Would you not agree?

Someone ran into my car without leaving a name and phone number recently. It was unpleasant.

If you kill me, I move on to the resurrection, if the Lord so wills.

As for rape, I can imagine a lady's pain. I think, though, she would recover.

What in the...?!

Where could this possibly go from here? No good can come from this.

Abandon thread! :scared

If I had been raped, I would do everything humanly possible to put the person behind bars. Then I would take satisfaction knowing that if the rapist ever got out of prison, he would have to register as a sex offender anywhere he went, and likely have his photo on the internet identifying him as a sex offender and telling everyone where he lived.

I see your point but what you say is impossible for mankind. You show me a person that claims to have stopped all sinning and I'll show you someone that is fooling himself. We will continue to sin and when we do we are commanded to repentance. None is righteous; not one. Maybe we're saying the same thing in two different ways?

We've all sinned but the Lord commanded us to stop sinning.

One must ask themselves exactly what sin is. There aren't that many, it doesn't seem to me. We need to be chaste, humble, sober, love the Lord our God with all our hearts, minds, and souls, and love our neighbors as ourselves. If you are chaste, humble, and sober, and love the Lord with all your heart, mind, and soul, you've pretty much got all the bases covered.

1 Cor 15
"50 I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.â€

One day we will be without sin, but while under the curse of Adam, we are all subject to sin. We are told we need to be "perfect", but the word used (teleios) should be translated into "mature".

James 3:2 says "We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check."

What can you say about the woman of adultery? Christ told her, 'Sin no more' John 8:11
People should not deliberately sin.
Even a person addicted to something can still survive if s/he refuses to do that. (People are gonna break my head here :D - that's just the truth)

These verses should clear all doubts about Elijah's thread. Read it prayerfully and meditatively.

Coincidentally, I heard a sermon on this preached.
Verses 8 and 9 are more critical - as I agree with the preacher.

1 John 3 NKJV
4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.
5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.
6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.
7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.
8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.
9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.

The Holy Spirit is always there to lead us aright. I know it is not always easy to avoid sinning against God - but let us try and stop sinning.

When we eliminate sin from our lives, our problems disappear.

My Bible says that I must be perfect. I have found that when I resist temptation, all my problems vanish. Therefore I strive to be perfect every day. This is how Paul put it:

[17] But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed,
[18] and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. Romans 6:17-18 RSV

Sin has consequences. We can continue to experience the consequences of sin, or we can stop sinning.

Righteousness has consequences. The consequences of righteousness are paradise, right here in this lifetime.

Jesus told us to repent. Jesus told us to be perfect. This is the message we should pass along. True, Jesus died on the cross to save us from the sins we have already committed, but we must be obedient to Jesus.
