Bible Study Traditions of men

StoveBolts said:
Let me answer for MEC CC.

Ultimately, it's up to each individual to decide that through proper biblical discernment.....

Thats unBiblcal and impossible. There was no Bible in the early years of the Church, which makes that course of action one that the Apostles could never have taught.

:o
We have what they had 8-)

2 Timothy 3:14-16 But continue in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing of whom you have learned them; And that from a child you have known the holy scriptures, which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

These verses are talking about the Old Testament, although theologically it was ordered differently.

That being said, every Christian of this age has no excuse for not having the entire cannon. Let's get with the 21st century :-D

You have to ask yourself why Paul wanted Timothy to know the scriptures... I know that Timothy was not considered a full Jew (Gentile father, un-circumcised etc), but have you ever wondered why every good Jewish boy had at least the books of Moses memorized verbatim?

Colossians 2:8 "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ:"

Don't let the "tradition of men" spoil you. Don't let the elements, and rudiments of the world spoil and draw you away from the faith that you have in Christ Jesus. Philosophy is the reasoning by man to justify the guilt that comes by his evil works. You reason away what you have done that is sin, so that your conscience will not bother you.

Today many philosophers mean well, and many of them even call themselves Christians. In their churches they get together and read their philosophy right from the pulpit, yet they have no idea if it is biblical or not. Your "church creed", do you know if that creed is biblical or is it a form of the traditions of men? Today many religious systems adopt slogans, sayings and deed that are absolutely contrary to the Word of God, and in a sense make it void. You keep from falling into the traps of those commitments by studying God's Word, and checking out what you are asked to believe by that church system. Don't listen to any man without checking him our with the Word of God, that is your only authority.

The "rudiments" are the elements that go to make up this world age. II Peter 3:10; "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up."

It is not the earth and the materials that go to build a house, but the evil and wicked thing that are part of Satan and his realm that will be done away with. The earth will still be around for another thousand years through the Millennium kingdom, for this is where Christ is coming back to and setting up his kingdom. When you get rid of the criminals, the idolatry, the strive and thing that cause violence including Satan and his evil spirits and fallen angels, you will have a pretty good old world.

Lets read a wee bit further, the reason I believe in a completely new heavens and a new earth is simple. The Lord of Glory will want everything brand spanking new, no thorns no thistles, no corrupt
heavens no Moon with its battered face, a new man in the Moon if you will. God has done all of these things for "His" good pleasure, we are his pleasure so relax and enjoy your heavenly Father.

II Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

We distinguish divine Tradition from mere ecclesiastical tradition or custom. Divine Tradition comes from God, either through the written word of the Bible or through the oral teaching of Christ himself or his apostles. Because it is revealed by God, divine Tradition may not be altered by men.

Ecclesiastical tradition or custom, on the other hand, originates with the Church's pastoral and disciplinary authority and may change

CC,
Which scripture that has already been posted were you commenting on?

Its always the same tired old quote, with an underlying inferrence that all traditions are bad, when on page one of this thread we established that they are not. At least, that is how I receive the quote.

Never did I say all traditions were wrong, however if it goes against the Word, whom shall I believe?

Can you give me an example of oral tradition, from Christ? Please nothing from the apostles, just Christ Himself

Absolutely,

And what is MORE prudent is the ABLILITY to discern those 'traditions' that HAVE no bearing on tht which has been offered through scripture and Spirit. And I don't MEAN 'spirit'. For OUR 'spirit' is able to devise WHATEVER 'it' desires to appease the FLESH.

Blessings,

MEC
And who is to decide that?

Well TC it should be this “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.†(Revelation 4:11)

But instead is this: Welcome to the BPO Elks of the USA. With just under 1 million members in more than 2,000 lodges across the country, the Elks are one of the largest and most active fraternal organizations in the world!

Man has always and forever given in to the traditions of the flesh, and the only cure is first: getting to know Jesus Christ, in order to do that you must secondly give up all of those traditions and let God be your guild, and last: surrender of your entire being to Christ Jesus by repenting of all of your sins. Once done you will have the tradition of eternal life, where time exists no more. ;-)

I noticed a thread on "Tradition of Man" was started in the AP forum. Please, lets keep these two threads separate and keep the spirit of this forum moving toward a forum that advocates learning and growing in our understanding of God's word, the Bible, within an open, friendly environment.

In the event that this thread starts to turn into a debate, let me remind everyone that this is the Bible Study Forum, it is not a debate forum, nor is it the Apologetics forum.

Thank you everyone for your consideration.

BTW, this has been a nice study so far, thanks for everyone's input.
