When I get back from Afghanistan, it will be right before Christmas...

I am probably going to fly home, spend Christmas with the family,
buy a car and all that good stuff..
and then I am thinking about spending a week somewhere..

Before I joined the army, I had rarely been out of TX.. (besides
for Las Vegas once.. I don't want to talk about it :lol )

and there is alot of places that I haven't been to,
I especially haven't planned a trip by myself..

so does anyone have any good ideas of places to visit?

I am considering:

Washington, DC

New York City

and umm.. that's it I guess! Any advice would be appreciated :)

Think southern Utah / Northern Arizona and don't forget Bryce Canyon in Utah.
Monument Valley (Many John Wayne westerns filmed there)
Moab (Arches National Park)
Grand Canyon (take the tour)
Hoover Dam

There's a LOT of scenery in the West.

Um, if you're up for across the country, I'd want to visit Cali (yay for skiing...)

Or maybe go to the Keys in FLA. The snorkeling if fine.

Or Boston/Cape Cod. Boston is beautiful!

What about Myrtle Beach? Love it there too! But, it simply can't compete with the Gulf waters.

You've got some good ideas on here so far! Can't wait to see where you choose!

what about cherokee,nc gatlinburg,tn, orlando, fl peace river also in florida

New orleans, la not the french quarter, though that has a lot of historical interest, but the grave sights are interesting.

how about Australia? I'ts worth the visit (trust me :D, I know what I'm talking about :D!).

Places I'd suggest:
*Go to Sydney, see the harbour, Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge, go into Kings Cross (if your feeling game :biglol)
*The Blue Mountains (just west of Sydney (2 - 2 1/2 hours drive from CBD) has some great sceanery, including the three sisters (may have heard of it)

there's sooooo much more really, you could spend months here and not see half. I've been here my whole life and still have only just skimmed the surface! :lol.

If you are interested, there's a country town in western NSW called Parkes. It has the Parkes radio telescope, which aided in the moon landing. it's featured in a film called The Dish.

Quite awesome!

Here are some images, but they're links, cause it was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image :mad

Sydney CBD at night (not as good as Tokyo or Hong Kong I'll admit! :D)

Hey Guys.. thank you so much for the ideas! A slight change of plans though..My family is going to come
with me wherever I go!

I was thinking about it, I haven't seen my family in a while. In the past 2 years, the total time that I have seen my family is about a month.. and I want to spend time with them as much as I can.
After all, I start medic school early next yr and that is more time away from home.

I am definitely going to check those places out!

NY and Boston sound awesome.. and as for TN, I am stationed out of there. I have seen quite a bit of it, I would encourage others to come check it out! It's a beautiful country, there is sooooo much to do in Nashville..music wise.. and not just country either. (Even though the country music scene is awesome)
I am still kind of looking at Washington, DC but some of my friends around here are telling me to wait about that.. go somewhere else with my family and as soon as we get back from leave.. we'll all take a road trip and go. A whole bunch of soldiers back from Afghanistan..heading to Washington, D.C. :D

It sounds like so much fun.. I heard they have great meusems and alot of history.. that is what I definitely want to check out.

and Nick... Australia! YES! I have always wanted to go there. I wouldn't this time because this trip is going to be something in the country, not too long and just a chance to relax
but on my next deployment, I want to go there for R&R!

Everyone has been taking trips to all these countries, and one of my friends is about to go.. he's going to tell me all about it when he gets back.. and I definitely want to go.
I will get a full 15 days for Australia, and like you said.. I might not get to see everything but I'm sure it will be a great time!

As soon as I am out of the army, the FIRST thing I am going to do is take a trip to Israel and participate in one of the tours. I wanted to do it in the army.. but I wouldn't get enough leave days. The tour that I want to take is a month long. I am excited :) even though it's a ways away..it will give me time to plan.

Also, I have been to Ireland and Germany... beautiful places! Germany reminded me of the Sound of Music.. (even though that was a completely different place but still :) ) <3

Thanks! That would be awesome :D The top of the list is of course shopping.. how is the shopping there? :lol

That's what I was going to suggest :yes :thumb

I was just up in D.C. with my husband last weekend, and it was great but I wouldn't want to spend and entire week there. It took us two days to see everything, and once you've seen it its time to go :lol I'm not a big city girl :shades

I think I'd like to go to somewhere like Brazil or South America. The tropical climate would be fun to explore. After a bit there, send me to Greenland and let me live in a snowy place.

brazil is hot year round on the coast, but beaware that it a has some issues with corruption, a freind of mine is from there(Rio de Janiero)

Well, South Africa is good too :) You must drop in if you like animals. I can see giraffe and zebra , wildebeest, Kudu, and many other animals from where I sit and post on the forum. But I am also close to the city and travel is easy . Cape Town (far from me) is a jewel if you like the sea (Indian and Atlantic join there) and the mountain is beautiful hugging the city. The food is spectacular and so are the people. SA is a very friendly place (but you also have to look out for the evil dudes ) Next year we are hosting the Word soccer, so I guess we will be overrun with people from all over.

Food: Lots of curries. We have the largest Indian population outside of India itself. We are also huge meat fans, so cook a lot outside on the barbecue. Wine is good too. But we have a good mix of world cuisine as well, because all our ancestors came from France, Germany, and Holland mostly. The English dropped in for a war or two some time ago and left us with boiled beans and boiled mostly everything, but that did not last too long (I see they have also improved a lot since then. The English have turned themselves around and are now cooking up a storm)

You can go diving with the Great White sharks ( in or out of a cage), you can go to a place called " Hot as Hell" which apparently lives up to its name, or you can ski in the Dragon Mountains (Drakensberge) if you get tired of the dolphins and whales in Plettenbergbay :) You can rent a Harley and tackle the roads by yourself, or join a group . We have a two deserts you can go to, and some semi desert, and everything in between up to sub-tropical, where there are palm trees and coconuts growing on the beach.

I think I am going to pack my bags. :lol

Yes, there's some good shopping, most notably some in the Sydney CBD, like the Queen Victoria Building and Strand Aracade, Pitt Street Mall and many others.

I've just spent a week on Fraser Island, off the Australian coast - it's the most beautiful place you'll ever visit, trust me.

Hi,

I'm a travel enthusiast myself and I saw you mentioned a possible trip to Israel. I was there on an amazing (and very spiritual) trip a year ago. I can't even begin to tell you about the place- it's not like anywhere I've ever been to. It has so much history and spirituality to it... There's also lots of great partying and shopping and beaches and hiking... What can I say? I fell in love with the place.
I think I owe a lot of it to the tour guide I had. I didn't have as much time as you're planning your trip to be, but he made those two weeks I was there the most meaningful they could be. If you do end up going there, you should check out his website for some ideas: israelwithavi.com. I bugged him with a million email before I even booked anything and he was extremely helpful.

Have a great time wherever you go!

Thank you for the website!

I will definitely check that out. I have always wanted to go visit Israel..
I'm seriously thinking about booking that for my next mid-tour leave
during deployment.
I would even love for my family to come along.. that would be awesome

Everyone has given me such amazing ideas.. kind of makes me anxious for
when I get out of the military, I can travel more freely
