UnChristian Reading Material

Should Christians spend time reading what they know to be 'unChristian' reading material?

Only if it dilutes their faith. Me, I like to read Sci Fi. Does it hinder my faith? I don't think so. But that is just me. I have learned, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to discern truth from non-truth.

I share Vic's point - not if it deludes one's faith.

However, I travel a lot for work, and read on the plane. If I am reading non-christian material, does it send the wrong message to others, or give the wrong impression about me?

If a new believer is sitting with you on a lunch break and you pull out Anne MacCaffy's newest book on dragons...is it possible that you 'may' be sending the wrong message? I don't know. I'm a library clerk and see many Christians read everything but Christian books and wondered...

LOL, well that's a bit of an extreme example, since I have no interest in dragons...nanobots maybe. Besides, I have no idea who Anne MacCaffy is. :-? Jason, I guess it all depends on the situation and circumstances.

Sorry, we file her work with the SciFi but she's more fantasy.

It's a difficult one. We have a houseful of occult/Pagan books because my husband's still in it, but I don't read them any more except when discussing with Pagans on Exwitch forum.

As has already been said, it depends on the individual. If you're reading nonchristian stuff more than christian, particularly the Bible, then I'd say there is a problem. Follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. If it's wrong you'll know it.

Don't like Anne McCaffrey - give me Guy Gavriel Kay any day.

I've not read it yet - waiting to borrow it from a friend. What's so bad about it? Is it a conspiracy theory along the lines of The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail?

Brown ripped a lot of his material from Holy Blood, Holy Grail. If you've read that, you'll already know much of the plot. He also pulls stuff from other similar conspiracy type books and does a good job of weaving them all together, so you might want to check it out if you're entertained by this stuff.

I might just do that - I enjoy comedy  Same old lies, huh?

I borrowed it from a neighbor when I first became saved, about a year and a half ago. Bad decision. I had no idea what it was about. I just knew everyone was reading it at the time. If I read it today, now that I'm stronger and more knowledgable, it might not have shaken up my faith so bad. It took me weeks to get back to where I was before and stop doubting the Word.

Yes, it's a theory about what the Holy Grail is. And there is nothing holy about it. The best tool he uses is mixing truths with half or non-truths. This tactic, as you probably know, can be very compelling. Just please, read it with caution, or my best advice is don't read it at all. Certainly don't BUY it to help support this genius atheist.

I don't understand the controversy. It is a work of fiction, right? Or does he present the theme as historical fact?

He presents his work of fiction as historical fact based on the theme or his theory about the Holy Grail.

Do you know if Constantine was an actual Christian and produced an empire based on his beliefs or did he use it as a way to unite the newly conquered people? Did his first high priests not only come up with the idea of the Trinity but also many of the Catholic doctrines (to keep people in line)? Was he the one responsible for the supposed cutting and pasting of the scriptures to meet his controlling needs? Brown puts down the latters as fact.

According to Brown,
The Knights of Templar are thought to have been banished or went into hiding but he displays them as the protectors of the Grail (the Grail being information) until present day where a secret society kept it hidden until the world was 'ready' to hear the 'truth' about Jesus Christ.
Da Vinci, a shameless pagan, received contracts from the early Christian churches to paint religious murals and large portraits. He was a prankster and he would hide little pagan symbols in the paintings to show his disdain. You can look up the particular paintings on the internet and actually see what he's talking about. One of them is none other than The Last Supper, showing that one of the disciples, sitting closest to him, is a female.

Mary Magdelene was the most important disciple, true. Jesus may have been the first feminist in history. Brown puts her on this pedestal because she was the wife of Jesus and they were very affectionate towards eachother, publicly. She was pregnant with His daughter, Sarah, at the time of His crucifixion. Mary M. and mother Mary were the only ones who hung around-remember the rest of the disciples fled. Then Brown says Mary M. fled to France after the death of Jesus and gave birth. There were a few names the main character new of that might have been part of Jesus' bloodline, after the fact. At the end, you get to find out who His present-day descendants are. No one famous, and not really a surprise.

So, the blaspheme goes on and on. Still wanna read it?

I was also a bit dissapointed that Ron Howard has taken on this movie. Up to this point, I have always admired most of his work for it's down to earthness, etc. :sad

I can't believe it. Just after the Passion of the Christ causes a great revival, we're gonna have this garbage, a Ron Howard film, no less, on the scene. I don't know if I want to barf or cry. :crying:

Are we talking UN Christian or NON Christian - because I see those as two different things. Un Christian I would see as like Darwin or Davinci Code or stuff like that, while non christian could include J.R.R. Tolkien, Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Patrick O'Brian etc. all my favorite authors. And in all honesty there isnt much truly good "Christian" fiction (I do suggest Brock and Bodie Thoene though)
