Understanding

Should you let religious leaders do your thinking for you, or should you make sure you UNDERSTAND religious issues?

Proverbs 1
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 9
10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Proverbs 4
7 Wisdom is the principal thing;
Therefore get wisdom.
And in all your getting, get understanding.

James 1
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Proverbs 2
6 For the Lord gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding;

Matthew 7
7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

It is my belief that our walk is a personal one and that we are responsible for our own spiritual well being. While teachers have their place within the christian community, I don't believe it's wise to solely rely on them for our spiritual health.

Acts 17
10 Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews.
11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.

Great quote Gary on Acts 17:10-11, that's what I was going to share.

As a pastor, my job is to teach my people how to not only interpret scripture and discern the leading of the Holy Spirit, but it is also my job to teach them how to filter ideas and do their own study and reach their own conclusions.

Amen Gary and Andrew and we know what happened to the people who followed the wrong teachers during Jesus Ministry.

Mat 15:14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

1John 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

It's that anointing that is in us by that of Gods Holy Spirit that we discern that which is being taught us. If what one teaches does not line up with scripture then I would question that teaching.

We should listen to those that know more from us because we can learn from them but we should also learn for ourselves and go to others to help us. If we do not have our known understanding of scripture than we are missing out.
