Using games for ministry

Found this article about Halo 3 being used in churches to reach out to teenagers.

What do you guys think? I think it's a great idea, but I'd prefer a T game to a M game for churches. Perhaps a game like Star Wars: Battle Front II or Super Smash Bros. would be a more suitable choice. Not saying that Halo is a bad idea, but I saw in this link about letting teenagers access material they couldn't buy in stores. However, Halo isn't that violent of a shooter though. Not even blood is shown in the multiplayer mode if I remember.

My associate pastor would always throw some sort of HALO/GoW/SSB LAN party thing, invite a few friends from church, and a few who are not in church, it's a great way to reach out and have a good time with all!

Dude, Halo I can understand, but there is some seriously excessive cussing in Gears. I dunno man, I think that's going too far for a church event. What kind of message are we trying to give people here?

I can 100% Gaming for Ministry. I play Online games and the first thing I do is assess what kind of Christian ministry is possible. I ran a ministry group on IMVU, a 3d chat kinda game for over 2 years. Halo can be good, as I met and served with other Christians on the game as well.

gow fun but way too gory. I had to educate my grandson on what the 30mm minigun does to the human body so that he sees one that its not like that on the game and to show what it does do. I will avoid that game as i see no need for that level of violent entertainmant in my life.

One thing the article said was that it was letting children play games they wouldn't be able to play from stores. All places check ID's for Mature games, meaning teen's can not get them without their parents permission. If a church is doing this, I think this is a bad idea. My question is, do the parents know what their children are playing? Do they know the content in these games? If they ban it at home, then they will see church as a way to get a way from it. I think Gears of War should not be allowed in church, or any insane gory shooter or game.

I still think Shooters are a great way to minister to teenagers. They allow for players to get together, and play virtual tag against each other. Killing is defined as taking one persons life. Well, if they come back to life, are you really taking their life? It would be like going to a laser tag or paintball arena. If that's not wrong in real life, well, how about in a virtual place. I'd stay play games like Star Wars: Battlefront or any other great T-rated shooter games. Halo I don't think is that bad, as multiplayer isn't that bad. With a small change, it could be turned into a T-rated multiplayer game. Parents do need to be alerted though.

Speaking of paintball, here's a little video I found funny. It's a beer commercial, but beer isn't a sin, so enjoy this video!
