Nick,I had always been on the leading edge of Microsoft software, but when Vista was still in the making, I realized that it was a mistake to get it. I was one of the first people to warn that if your PC was designed for XP, that it probably could not handle Vista. I was right.

Over the years, Vista's problems have been solved, but 7 is coming along, and it is a far superior product. Like New Coke, the Buffalo fighter plane, and the Ford Edsel, Vista has its good points, but there aren't enough.
If your machine is at the proper specs and, well over, well over is better, you will handle Vista with no problem. 2 GB' of Ram and a CPU speed of 2 G's and up, dual core even better, and a reasonable video card will handle Vista without any problems. Vista is a resource hog, so the more you have the better,

:thumbsup. That's probably why I like it - i've got the specs for it.

Forgot to post the outcome. According to the store it was a bad hard drive. However, my wife also had problems installing Kaspersky on her 32-bit XP laptop. And tomorrow, I am going to help my mother-in-law with her computer. She tried installing it as well and now she can only get into Safe Mode and her computer won't shut down.

I'm bringing a removal tool and registry fixer to see if those will help. Anyone else familiar with XP not shutting down? I know there are some known problems but I really only know enough to be dangerous and don't want to do too much.

Kaspersky has been great for the last two years but it seems as though they put out a really buggy program this year.
