Vonage phone service

Anyone have it? Pros? Cons?

My parents pay a lot for local and long distance. They refuse to get cell phones, so that's out of the question. Something like Vonage would save them money (it's $24.95/month) and they'd get all the features that they currently do NOT have.

Long distance to anywhere in the U.S, Canada and Puerto Rico
Voicemail
Caller ID with name
24/7 live customer support
Call waiting and forwarding
3-way calling
No contract

The only thing that has me concerned is the small, fine print:

Rates exclude: broadband service, activation, regulatory recovery fee, 911 fees, premium services, equipment, Vonage compatible equipment, termination, taxes, and shipping.

That ain't bad, I went to Cavalier, I got away from Verizon because of the high DSL payments, and as soon as I did that, they dropped the prices to $14.95 a month down from $ 29 bucks a month, and with all the other added stuff that I had, Verizon was out of control. But Vonage sounds better than all of them. I like what I saw in your post Nikki. That price is great.

Something your going to need to take into account is if they dont have highspeen inet then vonage wont work for them

I have vonage and am on the basic service for 14.99 a month. It is awesome. I love it. But yes, they do need high speed internet for it to work.

29.95 a month is not bad Lewis. That is what I pay for almost 2mbps. Read or listen to the Verizon ads... the $14.95 is for high speed, not broadband.

Up to 768 Kbps /
128 Kbps

Vic high speed what DSL and Broadband are high speed.
I know but up here in the NYC area, Verizon redifined their three services since they uped their DSL service; dialup, high speed and broadband.

My point was, $14,95 is for 768 kbps, not for their faster service.

Peace,
Vic

I stick with my cellphone. When you get a line phone, those charges change everything. My last brush was with Comcast who outsources the phone and the $25 price they promised me would have no fees, but it turned into $59 when the bill came. I immediately cancelled. Before that I had verizon and it was a $25 deal, but it became $45 with all the line fees added to it.
I can do without it.

Thats why I love vonage. Aftter tax, the 14.99 is only $16. It is great.

Yeah, they have cable internet access.

I asked about it on a few other forums and havebeen told that if the power goes out, the phone goes out. They don't have a cell phone as backup and as long as you have a corded phone, you still get phone service here. That's important when we get ice storms here in the winter and power is out for a week at a time.

They also said that if someone is on the computer at the same time that someone is using the phone, the phone connection will be "choppy" and you will only hear bits and pieces of what the other person is saying.

Have you ever had that problem?

Never had any problems with the sound quality. I am on the internet a lot and the phone sounds just like when I had a land line.

Logan,

Is this the plan you signed up for?

http://vonage.com/no_flash/products_basic.php

I see here
All you need is a broadband connection (such as DSL or Cable Modem) and a regular corded or cordless touchtone phone. We provide a free phone adapter when you sign up for service through Vonage.

they provide some sort of free "phone adapter" but I could'nt find any info on their site about it. Is that what your using too a regular corded/cordless phone?

I want do drop my cell service which is why I'm asking.

TIA

Never mind, found it.

Yes it is. They send out a free adapter which your phone cord plugs into. There tech support is alright (based in India) I believe. Once you get it setup though, it is easy.

WOW!

I can even keep my cell's #.
Our records indicate you can keep your current telephone number!

Hmmmm......$53.17 - $16.00 = substancial saving!

Looking good!

Any refferal plan so you can get some credit?

Based in India, isn't that a little scary ?

Just there tech support (or at least the 2 guys I talked to). I talked with another guy that was based in the U.S. They are friendly and helped me just fine.

By the way, I just saw a commercial for verizon and DSL is 14.99. I wouldn't use it because of all the little catches they have.

I got the e-mail from vonage with a refferal for you Logan. I tucked it away till next month and will use the link so you get a perk.

Funny thing.....just hooked up a client to Vonage today and the phone worked right off the bat but none of the 4 LAN ports on the Linksys VoIP router would work. Their sending out a new unit along with a RMA for the current one.

Hope the new one spiffy good!
