When she went to Walmart, Michigan mother Leann Ward used her Bridge Card and asked for 100 dollars cash back as part of the assistance she receives from the state. She took the money and went to a store next door to buy cleaning supplies, only to find that the cash she had been given at Walmart was counterfeit. When Ward took the fake bill back to Walmart, she was told they couldn't do anything for her because she had left their building. Despite being out 100 dollars, Ward isn't too upset, saying that her family could scrape along for a few weeks, and just wants her neighbors to know that there is fake money circulating.

reba Walmart sells caskets and have been doing so for years and you can get quality ones there cheap way cheap. Check it out here. The reason why they sell is because the law says that funeral homes must allow you to by caskets from where you want to buy them. You do not have to buy the jacked up priced funeral home caskets, so walmart saw dollar signs.

How can we know the real from the fake and not lose our money, if you cant do anything about it after you leave the store? And even the bank giving you bad money? If they don't even know we're sunk

Chances are, someone passed the bogus bill off to a Walmart cashier earlier in the day, and it eventually ended up this woman without abyone being able to detect it.

I'm with Walmart on this. If the woman left the building and came back later, Walmart has no idea if she's telling the truth or trying to run a scam.

Yes I can understand their view, they don't know if she could have got it from somewhere else . But my point is how to protect ourselves from this happening.

Study a good bill and dont worry about embarrassing your self or the clerk by checking the bill out... learn the water mark hold it to the light... Dont go to the local store looking for bills go to the bank..

My first thought was walmart sells cleaning supplies...so i doubted her story... my guess she pocketed good bills and tried to exchange bad ones.

I dont know, they could possibly have given her fake money and didn't know it. Some people will get certain things at the dollar store to save money.

There's a way to hold the bill up to the light.... cashiers are trained to do that to determine counterfeit or real. If the woman in question actually received the fake bill from WalMart, then the cashier wasn't doing his/her job. If the money tray arrived pre-filled with the fake bill to the cashier, then someone else hadn't done his/her job.

Next point: WalMart does not typically distribute a single $100 bill when giving cash back. (Most retailers won't do that) Most cash drawers do not contain them, and when a cashier does take in one, he/she is supposed to summon a superviser to change it out.

My question is, however, why would the woman take $100 to buy cleaning supplies next door? To me, something doesn't exactly sound right. Still, if all was on the up and up, and the woman was told by the store next door that the bill was fake, there's no way WalMart would know if the woman was telling the truth about the source for the money.

What is a Bridge card?

I don't think we can...unless it's so fake as to be obvious even to a layman. How many of us are skilled at detecting conterfeits? Not many, I'm guessing.

Cleaning supplies that is nothing Reba they sell that and more, you must did not see my answer to your post up above.

I'm not a citizen of Michigan, but if I were, I'd have a real problem with people being able to get cash back on the Bridge Card... The money is supposed to be for food assistance.

So, she got $100.00 cash back and went next door to buy other supplies... OK, most likely could have bought them from Wal-Mart, but OK...

What's to stop someone else from getting $100.00 cash back and going out and buying drugs?

Your tax dollars at work...
