okay guys, who's seen it and what did you think?

i went with my friends youth group last night and it was amazing. i was on the edge of my seat the whole time and it makes you hope for a prequel!!
Tom was amazing (as usuall) and the others were awesome as well.

let me know what you think!

I liked it. I was worried it would be an Independence Day type of movie, but it went in its own direction.

the aliens are kind of cheesey you have to admit but it was a wonderful story. my friend has read the book and he said that it ruined the suspence of the movie for him but he still liked it!

So it's not a bad take off the original 'war of the worlds'? We want to see it but we were worried it would just be a bad take off the original!

I'd like to go see this movie. But between Spielberg, Cruise, and movies in general... kind of debating if I want to have a meaningless self-boycott of this one, tough call.

Glad you all enjoyed it though, the trailers look incredible!

Heh. Spielberg is the one that made the movie about the being that comes from the heavens. The being heals people. It is then persecuted. It dies. But the being returns from the dead to ascend into the heavens.

And that being is....

E.T.

Finally got to see this yesterday. I have to admit to having mixed feelings about this film.
Some of the following comments do contain spoilers. Anyone not wanting to have parts of the film given away, Stop Now.

My real problems have to do with the aliens and their weapons.
1, The aliens buried their tripods on the earth sometime in the past. What kept us(humans), from finding at lest one in the past hundred years? With all the mines, oil shafts, natural erosion, earthquakes and construction, you'd think that one would would have been uncovered since the start of the industrial age.
2, Since the aliens had to have come here to bury their machines, what prevented them from being killed the first time they were on earth? And if they did run into the germs the first time, what kept them from being prepared this time?
3, Why wait till now to invade? They were here first! Did they decide to stockpile a set of weapons in case an enemy might appear sometime in the future? Why let an enemy develop in the first place? They could have taken over hundreds, or even thousands, of years ago.

Okay, rant over. This could have been a great alien invasion film. As it was, this is only on par with Independence Day. :sad

I saw it a few days ago. It'll definitely keep your attention. I also agree with some of the questions that Khaine brought up.

****Don't look any further if you haven't seen it. *******

In addition to the questions Khaine brought up, I'd like to add:
1. How was it that when the lightning storm first struck, cars, watches, clocks, and all electrical appliances ceased working, but a guy was able to bring his working camcorder to film the initial carnage?

2. How was it that there was mass destruction virtually everywhere......EXCEPT for the grandparents' home in Boston, where the inhabitants of the home remained unscathed and and nicely dressed? Come to think of it, their whole block of houses was unaffected by the invasion.

yeah it would have been better if the boy was hurt or dead or something. it was too fairytail-ish with everyone unharmed.

I saw it, and have a great deal of problems with this movie(SPOILERS):

1: Why the invasion when human beings can fight back, why didn't the aliens invade in the dark ages or something? They put those tripods in the ground and waited until humans could fight them.

2: If the aliens are trying to exterminate all humans, why do they blast at individual humans with death rays? EXTREME OVERKILL. And too troublesome.

3: Why do the aliens in the tripods communicate by foghorn?

4: Where did they come from, and what are the motives? The only thing we know is jealousy, and apparently the aliens can't find another way to get what they need besides stealing an occupied planet.

5: Why didn't the humans run AS SOON AS the tripod rose out of the earth? Why did they wait until they started getting Death rayed to say "Hey, maybe we should run away?"

6: Why was Ray's son so determined to go die? And why didn't he die?

7: Why was someone taping the invasion when all electrical equipment is out?

8: How come every place Ray wanted to go to was safe?

9: Why didn't the aliens discover the dangers to them by micororganisms on earth when they buried the tripods? They are extremely technologically advanced, how about bringing protective suits.

10: Why did the son drive into a mob while his dad was asleep. causing them to be attacked?

____

That's all I can think of now.

The best parts of the movie were the narrations by Morgan Freeman. (Is it just me, or is he narrating a ton of movies lately?)

These are the only two questions that I can give any sort of answer to.
The foghorn is a carry over from the original novel. The Martians had several signals to use between the tripods to keep their attacks organized.

As to the movie aliens, I cannot give a real answer. In the novel there is clear evidence that the Martians came to Earth because they were running out of food. Yes, we humans were to be the new cattle for the invaders. Of course that thought is to horrific for the modern viewer so we are left to guess why they would come to earth.

Great thread, guys!

Anyone see UK Channel 4's docu @ it last night?

Spielberg said he made the film as a kinda parable against what he sees as USA imperialism, & said HG Wells' original book was also a message against imperialism

Wells was called the 1st writer to capitalise on a scientific education

He failed his degree, but his 3 famous books all show great imagination

I saw the movie the day after the 7/7 London bombings & it made me think very much @ the War on Terror

& @ the age-old war of good v evil, of God v Satan

As Deuteronomy 31 climaxes, "I set before you today both life..& death.. therefore, choose life"

Praise God that Jesus is "FAR above all other!"

I liked the movie overall, but the ending was very weak, unconvincing and rushed. I would discribe this movie sort of like a cross between "Signs" and "The Day After Tomorrow".
