Bible Study WELCOME TO AN IN DEPTH STUDY OF MATTHEW'S GOSPEL.

The Gospel is for the whole world. The apostles preached to everyone

Yes, indeed, Deborah. But this Scripture is teaching us to use discernment when sharing Bible truth beyond the Gospel. There are certain truths that are only accepted by those who are saved, because "the natural [unsaved] man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: FOR THEY ARE FOOLISHNESS UNTO HIM: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned" (1 Cor 2:14).

You will also notice that after the Jewish leaders began to oppose and malign the Lord Jesus, He began to speak in parables, so that hearing they would not hear, and seeing they would not see. Yet he explained those same parables to His disciples privately. We need to learn from the wisdom and discerment of our Lord.

The only message for the unsaved is "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved" (Acts 16:31). But after a sinner receives the Holy Spirit, he or she can understand and appreciate Bible truth. Otherwise they will simply "trample" it into the dust.

I think, "Holy Talk", is only Holy talk because we sometimes go out of our way to make it so, and thus turn off people from a myriad of lifestyles, because we don't speak in their language.
I'm presently reading a book by the pastor of The Gateway Church in Austin, TX, John Burke.. The title gives it away... No Perfect People Allowed.

So Jesus is sent out to the manger again?

So Jesus is sent out to the manger again?
Well, in a manner of speaking, "Yes".... IF you are more interested (as Jesus was) with helping people get past a thousand (throughout all the populace) misconceptions, fears and trust issues concerning "religion", than you are with declaring that you "did your duty", and quoted some Bible at them.

It might be shocking how many people think, "I am righteous because I TOLD them, it's now on their heads because they didn't listen to me."

Day 65 Wednesday 11/19/14 Matthew 7:6 Dogs & pigs.

As an introduction to our Text for today, I thought it would be wise to look at Proverbs 9:7-9.- 9:7 "Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse, and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury. 9:8 Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you; reprove a wise man, and he will love you. 9:9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning."

In O.T. times, dogs lived in the streets and scavenged those streets for food and therefore according to Jewish Law was unclean. Pigs are scavenging animals that trample their food under foot and therefore are considered unclean as well....Pearls, on the other hand are of great value and many times in Scripture refer to the Kingdom of Heaven or the Gospel in N.T. times. Those who continually reject the plans of God resemble dogs and pigs.

Matthew 7:6 "Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you."

This verse is rather very basic to the lives of the Jewish folk, and for ours today. Some of the older writers warned of speaking about holy things in front of unholy people. I have noticed the scowls of the unsaved when this is done. Back a few years ago, I along with about twelve other "bikers" were headed for "Rolling Thunder" on our motorcycles. Before we left Greenfield, MA. we started out from Dunkin Donuts. There were about seven unsaved bikers among us. I said, "Lets hold hands and pray for traveling mercies. Those unbelievers look at each other in disgust but did as I said. In New York, on our way, a young girl in a car cut in front of my bike and struck my front wheel sending my bike into a bucking bronco, violent up & down motion. I sensed an invisibly hand touch my front wheel stopping the bucking motion. I did not go down which these unsaved bikers were astounded over. Later when we stopped, two of those bikers said, "now we know why you had us pray. That incident at about 70mph made a huge impression on them. So what started out as a crude feeling against the things of God, He reversed them, Praise His Name.

Generally speaking, it is unwise to have holy talk amongst unholy people. This Scripture is warning against it because some unbelievers so hate God and Jesus that they will strongly reject and will abuse the folk who are speaking about the wonders of God....This is when these people are referred to as dogs. Dogs will attack anyone that they dislike. Then there are the pigs. In the same scenario, pigs will just trample under their feet holy talk because that's their nature to do so. What can we learn from this? We have to have wisdom from God to know the difference from folk who will receive the "Good News" as something that will benefit them or people who are disgusted with holy talk and just trample and attack those who present the Gospel.

Praise God for His intervention to the prayer He put in your heart!

....pearls are are not a natural gem, they are produced from a foreign object that is an irritant in the oyster, we are pearls, we are the foreign objects the cause an irritation in the Kingdom of Heaven, but the continuous washing and cleansing of the Word causes us to become gems, ...however if, in the company of pigs, we continually talk about what the Lord has done in our lives, the pigs will trample us under their feet and break the pearl covering exposing the core and who we were, ...then we risk becoming like the pigs and participate in their filthy living habits.

Well, I guess David Wilkerson must have misunderstood too, so I'm in good company.

Oh my, David Wilkerson, What a wonderful testimony of a man of God facing certain violent abuse for the Gospel. There are other men and women who have put themselves in harms way to spread the Gospel but we just don't hear about it....Thanks Deb for reminding us. :hug

Day 66 Thursday 11/20/14 Matthew 7:7-11 Seek, knock, find.

Matthew 7:7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
7:8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
7:9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?
7:10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent?
7:11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!"

This is such an informative portion of Scripture. It has IMO two ways of interpreting it. One way is to carefully subject it to other portions of Scripture that build a foundation for it of which I hope to list, and the other is the "prosperity gospel" which isolates these verses to support preconceived doctrines of which I won't list. Perhaps others might want to comment on the prosperity gospel.

V.7 "Ask, seek, and knock" First lets look at "ask". 1st John 5:14,15
1John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.
5:15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

A simple way of explaining these verses is to ask God for things that are consistent for God to give. That requires good old Bible study from the O.T. to Revelation. If we don't know what is the nature of God to do, then we can't pray according to His will. A side note to this is what most of us say at the conclusion of a prayer, "In Jesus Name". Over the years, this has been a question in many minds, what does in Jesus Name really mean? Sometimes I have said, "It means, if Jesus were here, would you ask Him to give you that" or is what you are asking, consistent with what you know He would give you.

V.8 Is saying, I think, Be persistent, the word knock means like knocking on a friends door until he opens it. And this verse is really a reflection of 1st John 5:14,15. If what I ask in prayer, if it lines up with God's will, I have it.

V.9,10 No parent would give a child something that would hurt them. Some requests might be according to God's will but God sees down the road that that request would end up hurting me, and therefore He will withhold that item. That becomes really tough when my Christian neighbor got what I was praying for and I didn't, ouch!

V.11 In comparison to an earthly parent who gives, our Heavenly Father does so much more because He is so much higher than a parent is. There is nothing impossible for God, and a parent is limited to their resources, and God's love far exceeds a parents ability to love and cherish that child because He sees the future.

The next time I pray for what I think is a need, I need to remember these principles so my prayer will have a chance to be given me....Faith? I like to think of faith as confidence. Look at 1st John 5:14,15 again, "And this is the confidence......." That my friends is what feeds great faith, knowing that God will do it because of past experience, a promise of God, and knowing the Nature of God as outlined by all the Names of Jehovah.

I always thought that God knows the desires of our hearts and that is what He wants us to tell Him. So I might as well just spit it out and be specific. That is how Jesus prayed to the Father. He told His father what He desired and then said, "Your will not mine." So I think that is the way to pray for our desires.
I don't think it's my job to try figure out what God's will is for me to have and then pray what I think. Just speak my heart and trust Him.
In Jesus' name. There is power in that name.
I wonder about His workings as our mediator. Moses was the Hebrew children's mediator. They talked to him and he talked to God for them. So I wonder if our mediator doesn't sort out my imperfect prayers and present them to the Father in a perfect way?

Praise God for His intervention to the prayer He put in your heart!

My good friend Karl. I want you to know how much I appreciate your comments on our Bible study. You are a deep thinker and I love that. Your teaching on a pearl is fantastic, I had not thought of that and it added a wonderful picture to my mind as well as adding to what I posted which was a crucial understanding of the text....Again, thank you so very much. I will be looking forward to more of your instructions.

That is another way of looking at this Text Deb, actually I think more people look at prayer your way than what I have listed. So thank you for your comment, it displays another very popular side of a request before our Father. I have always enjoyed your comments in these studies. Your commitment to our studies has not gone unnoticed, I can always rely on you to instruct, perhaps another side of the picture.

There are times when I get a little upset over the fact that so few people respond to the study, I don't know if anyone other than those of you who post, if anyone else reads them There are some who do say that they read them, it's just that it takes a lot of my time to research and then type out the study that at least others could take a few minutes to comment. Oh well, sorry for crying on your shoulder my very special friend Deb-er-roo. Love you :hug

Thank you Chopper for the encouragement, I don't hear that here, most consider me obnoxious, I'm always looking for a good Bible Study, keep up the good work and thanks for your time, I appreciate it, ...going in for cataract surgery in a couple of hours, might not be around for a couple of days.

Lord bless,

Day 67 Friday 11/21/14 Matthew 7:12 A Golden Rule?

Matthew 7:12 "Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets."

I like what James calls the Golden Rule, James 2:8 "If ye fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well."

Hillel HaGadol, was a famous Jewish teacher and religious Leader before the birth of Christ Jesus, said, "Do not do to another what you would not have another do to you." He also said to one of his students "Whatever is hateful to you, do not do to another."

Another way of looking at this verse is, anything that would be upsetting to me, would upset someone else if I did it ti them.

My Mother used to tell me, "Put yourself in their place."

I have heard it said, "Walk in my moccasins."

The verse summarizes the teachings of the Law and Prophets. The Jewish leaders just couldn't get their heads around the fact that Jesus was the Messiah and the fulfillment of the Law that they cherished so much. Jesus taught so very much about treating their neighbors (near ones) as them selves, and this verse gathers up the Law in one statement.

Lastly, this should be the official statement of the purpose of CF.net, Comment to others what you would have them comment to you.

Yep, easily summed up, the rabbis taught don't do, don't react or get involved ...Jesus taught do, expend yourself, burn out, not fade out.

You are more than welcome friend, I will keep you in prayer until I hear that you're Ok. :hug

Chopper,

When we read this commandment, we must keep in mind that God has embedded into the universe the Law of Sowing and Reaping which is directly related to this command, and also produces a direct benefit to the person who sows righteously and does righteousness, and does more for others than required by them, or owed to them, or deserved by them. We read in Galatians 6:7-10:
7Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
8For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
9And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
10As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

In God's economy, nothing good that we do will go to waste, but instead will bring us a bountiful harvest, either in this life, or in the life to come (2 Cor 9:6-15):
6But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.
7Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
8And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:
9(As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever.
10Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;)
11Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God.
12For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God;
13Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men;
14And by their prayer for you, which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you.
15Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.
