What are you reading?

Sounds like a good book!

Have you ever read Holographic Universe? Part of it discusses life after death and what religious people have experienced. Don't get me wrong though-I don't think it is a religious book. But a very important one. SO, read the back flap first, :yes

I am currently reading four books:

David Hume (J. C. A. Gaskin, ed.), Dialogues and Natural History of Religion, Oxford World Classics, Oxford University Press, 1993

Roland de Vaux, Ancient Israel: Its Life and Institutions, Biblical Resource Series, Eerdmans, 1997

Samuel Driver, An Introduction to the Literature of the Old Testament, Kessinger, 2005

Victor Matthews, Social World of the Hebrew Prophets, Hendrickson, 2001

Thanks,
Eric

:study I'm reading about Christopher Robbin and Winnie the Pooh! :yes

I love that story! Especially as Winnie realizes that his very best friend in the whole world will grow and eventually leave him. :crying

^^ You would love my book collection. I should post a pic. Quite a bit of Christian spirituality/spiritual disciplines, theology and apologetics.

Currently reading "Surprised by Hope" by N.T. Wright.

Tom Wright is popular with many Christians, but I've never read anything of his, except for some excerpts from his co-authoring with J. D. Crossan on the Resurrection, though I surmise his arguments were somewhat attenuated forms of his more sophisticated, scholarly works. I'm looking forward to read the first 3 volumes of his 'Christians Origins and the Question of God' series, each circa 700 pages:

The New Testament and the People of God

Jesus and the Victory of God

The Resurrection of the Son of God

Especially the latter, because I plan to undertake a full-scale study of the Resurrection, and will doubtless have to reckon with Wright.

W. L. Craig, powerful in this enterprise, acknowledged it as the best defense of its historicity. Craig himself wrote a book on the Resurrection, valued at about $130, that I'm also alacritious to read.

But right now I'm studying Old Testament and Israelite religion, pre-/post-exilic and Hellenstic, and have so many books on my plate, currently totaling 28 in all, and there's still more to get. I want to master Hebrew bible. I don't read layman's books. I get down to the knitty-gritty, as you well know.

Thanks,
Eric

I finished that for the 3rd time about two weeks ago. My favorite parts are the cosmogony and secondly the Noontide of Valinor. I actually wrote a short fan-fiction set in that latter epoch a while back too.

Tolkien wrote that he wanted The Silmarillion to be an English mythology like other ancient cultures had. I think he did an excellent job, though it can be a bit cheesy and at times notably dependent upon the bible.

Btw, are you Bonnie from CARM?

Thanks,

Our Bible study just finished a study on prayer, called Bold I Approach. Very good study book.

I just finished reading "Never the bride" by Rene Gutteridge and Cheryl McKay..It took me about three days, I could NOT put it down! PLus, I usually never read fiction.. but this is a fiction novel and I absolutely loved it!

It's about a woman that is 34, single..never married.. and she is basically freaking out about it..
she desperately wants God to send her that special someone..
and about her search for "Mr. Right" and the guys along the way that God shows her aren't him..

its a lovely book.. I'd suggest it for all you Ladies :)

and men.. I dunno what I suggest for y'all.. the tv guide maybe?? That's all y'all seem to read anyway :D

Not all the time, lol. :D

Tim LaHaye, Babylon Rising.. different from the Left Behind series but just as interesting.
and Jesus Freaks, its a great book about christian martyrs

Finished David Hume's Dialogues and Natural History. He was such a brilliant philosopher, and he thought deep and deeply critical. I'm also amazed by his conversancy with classical texts. He was widely read.

Finis,
Eric

Those three sound very interesting! Out of the three, I may just check out Victor Matthews, Social World of the Hebrew Prophets, Hendrickson, 2001 It sounds great without any initial google searches :-)

Matthews is a fine scholar. I've also read his Manners and Customs in the Bible (1991) and own his (in collaboration with D. C. Benjamin) Old Testament Parallels: Laws and Stories from the Ancient Near East (2007).

It's about you, dear Jo-Jo, yes?
It's about me too, yes?

I love that title! "Work in Progress: An Unfinished Woman's Guide to Grace" -- so many things are written to "woman" that MEN need to hear! I'm Jacob the grabber in these things and desire the blessing from it - would you mind telling and sharing something -- a "gleaning" sometime later please?

Hey ya, Nick_29

I think I remember Kimberlyb0112 from an intro thread, soldier right?
My thought when I read this was, "Oohhh... what a sharp-tongued woman. I think I like her! :yes
I'm "taken" so that's not a flirt but just a thought. Also, am 'grampa age' for certain.

Hope she doesn't mind my talking about her like she wasn't here. *smile*
Prayers are offered in support of soldier everywhere, that and deep respect and thanks! Just-so's-ya-know.
Amen it, please brother?

Sparrow, I stayed up until 4:00 am reading this book last night. I couldn't put it down! Yes, it's written for women, but there are so many general life principles that men can relate to: forgiveness, courage, trust, honesty...I recommend this book to both men and women.

A gleaning? Hmmm. Well, I'll start with how God is using this book to speak fresh insight to me about a personal battle I've been engaged in for years. I won't go into details, but I can tell you that I can see the door to freedom...I'm getting there...I've yet to walk through it, but I can imagine myself walking through it and that is the first step. God is teaching me about the power and healing abilities in His presence.

Anyone who is looking for fresh insight an old problem (spiritual or emotional or maybe even physical) should read this book, praying God will use it to open his/her eyes and get on the pathway to freedom. :)
