What Do Christians Think About Robot Companionship?

Hello, I've come here looking for a first-hand Christian perspective on a topic which will become increasingly relevant to regular people and society. How do you feel about robot and human relationships? Should a robot ever fill the role of a singificant other in somebody's life? What insight does the bible give about this question? Why do you think people would want to pursue a romantic relationship with a robot? Finally, do you think it would be appropriate for Christians to be in intimate relationships with robots?

How do you feel about robot and human relationships?

I don't think it is healthy

Should a robot ever fill the role of a singificant other in somebody's life?

No

What insight does the bible give about this question?

According to the bible any sexual act outside of a marriage between a man and a woman is a sin

Why do you think people would want to pursue a romantic relationship with a robot?

There could be several reasons
A guy might be unsuccessful in finding a suitable woman
A guy might see too much risk in committing to a woman
They would be the main ones

Finally, do you think it would be appropriate for Christians to be in intimate relationships with robots?

Given that sex out side of a heterosexual marriage is a sin an intimate relationship with a sexbot would be inappropriate for a Christian

Where people are lonely, isolated and unable to get out then a robot companion would help them to care for them and provide company.
Given how expensive it is to employ people to work in care homes I can see robots being used here. In two ways a general purpose functional machine that delivers food trays, collects, cleans the room and also provides support for washing and dressing of people.
A centralised computer program that provides conversation to the person through a mobile toy or a computer screen.

Also as society fractures into more isolated units and finding a partner becomes more difficult I can see robots particularly if in human form taking the place of a human partner.
As has been said sex for the Christian is between husband and wife.
Society will follow its own path on this .
What will be the limiting factor will be cost, both of purchasing and running costs.

I have talked with a male believer who is very interested in enabling others to have this kind of intimate relationship, and is interested in being in such a relationship himself. What would you like to communicate to this man?

What you describe as a Christian man vx what God would describe as a Christian man are vastly different.

Well, he told me he is protestant and that he values his relationship with Jesus very much. He told me that he would like to help men facing romantic difficulty in today's social climate.

There's a huge difference between claiming Christ and actually following Christ.

The difference is in their behavior. The fruits of a relationship with Christ if you will. No one who knows Christ is ever the same. They are uniquely changed. What you are proposing is perversion.
We, Christians, don't embrace such things. We seek to live out our faith by acts of kindness and love for our fellow man...not engage in acts of perversion with a machine because we can't find a spouse.
In fact it's just the opposite. Single, available, genuine Christian men are almost unicorns in euphemism in Christian churches. AKA they are a myth only heard about and not seen or found. Every time one is around on a regular basis the women swarm him and won't leave him alone until he gets married.
Only the disingenuous men are lonely in a church.

Alright, this is very informative. This man is also somebody who greatly admires the Japanese people and their culture. A lot of the interest shown in robot companionship comes from Japan, a very secular society. How do you feel about this? Also, do you think that if Japan were to become a predominatly Christian society, the usage of technology in this way would continue to be supported?

I don't care what perversions the heathen perform. Of course the heathen are perverted...they don't have a relationship with God. They can't have a positive relationship with other people either.

Robots can't compare to people in regards to relationships. But loneliness is a real problem. I think a better answer is to get a pet. This isn't a solution for a romantic relationship but it can help soften the burden of being alone. And it has more to offer as far as relationships are concerned then robots do.

That's not really a Christian perspective, meaning it isn't dependent on what's taught in the bible or in a church. But it is a practical approach,

One other issue with robot like relationships I think would be the same issues that circle porn addiction and porn use. It harms the person's ability to have healthy relationships with real people. With a robot designed for a companion like response, it would ultimately be a poison to the person having it on their ability to hold healthy relationships.

Again I think that having a pet is a much better, healthier, and cheaper alternative then anything robotic.

I would say, in my experience on disability dealing with tech and internet trolls, is that there would most likely be a human involvement somewhere in the loop and that would be the rat in the walls with that. I seriously doubt there wouldn't be 3rd party surveilance involved watching through those "robot" eyes.

The relationship involving marriage is the only earthly relationship considered to teach us to have an intimate relationship with Christ. In marriage we learn perseverance, trust, forgiveness, understanding and many other things that can facilitate a person's walk with the Lord. None of these things can be accomplished with a robot except in the most selfish extent. One cannot truly love a robot nor be loved by it. It does nothing to further one's walk with the Lord except to show how void our lives would be to live in utter selfishness.

Hey Hideki....
Welcome to the forum.

Would this robot be able to clean, cook, wash, iron, go shopping for food, the drugstore, the post office, could it do the garden, sweep the street and speak to the neighbors?

Would it know when I'm feeling happy, or sad, or when I need a kind word? Will it know my favorite music and share in my food preferences? Will it be able to remember when we first met and share in all my memories of a life we've shared together?

If so, I guess I could think about it for a minute.
Ooops. The minute is up.
And that clunky metal must be so uncomfortable!!
It's not metal you say?
Is it skin and bones and blood?

No? Then what is the thing?
I see.
It's a thing.

Kind of scary.
Isn't it?

No, I don't think that robots and humans should have any type of romantic relationship. This is another rebellion against God's design of a man and woman marriage.

Even befriending robots is a bit tricky as they can't comprehend emotions and abide by programs they must follow unless they are smart enough to change their programs. They wouldn't get the same benefits of socialization that we would. The relationship would seem rather empty and lonely, wouldn't it?

He told me that he would like to help men facing romantic difficulty in today's social climate.

Say what? What is, romantic difficulty in today's climate mean? There isn't any. Women outnumber the men. Plus half the men are gay, others deadbeats or drunks. That is today's social climate. Anybody who can't get a date nowadays is blind or don't get out much.

Some say that as a woman ages, no stops being in their vocabulary. I take that with a grain of salt but it is a good illustration of the trouble it is for women to find a good man. So men can pretty much take their pick of women. So what were the robots needed for again?

It is not good for the man to be alone, I will make a robot for him...uh, no.
