What Does Romans 8:29 Mean?

Rom 8:29 (KJV) For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Does this say that The Father was predesignated to be the Son. Making the Father into the Son?

hi Zotah,

No - the verse before just says God works ... and the nature of the work is spelt out in v29,30. Being conformed to the image of His Son speaks about believers becoming Christlike, so the verses are talking about those who have been redeemed.

Rom 8
28And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
29For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;
30and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

This is often used to argue that God predestined or planned that certain people would find salvation or be damned. I believe this is an error in interpreting this scripture. There are too many verses that speak to our free will, and the Bible never contradicts itself. So what does this verse mean?

Whom does God foreknow ? Those who shall love God. As he looked into the future these were present to his mind; foreknown. What did he predestine of them? Not that they should love God. Not that they should believe; nor that some should be saved and others damned; but that those who he saw beforehand would love God, should be conformed to the image of his Son. The only thing predestined, or foreordained, is that those who love God as revealed in Christ shall become Christlike in life, and like Christ in eternity. This is the only decree in the passage.

True. God knew before hand "whosoever would come". And those who would He knew would come He predestined to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. That's the only decree. :yes

Sending Jesus Christ to the earth was an act of the continuing creation of God. God uses the raw materials that we are as men and continues accomplishing His will through upgrading our nature into His. He is preparing the righteous and obedient to take on the power to become His famioly in holiness. He is raising up spiritual sons and daughters. If we are willing and obedient we will see the glory of God.
