What exactly is sackcloth?

My current thinking is...it was black.....a single garment.....that in length was about the size of a mini dress or long T shirt. So that it was just long enough to cover the genitals. Yet it was open so people are more vulnerable.

You see biblical cases of people wearing sackloth both when they lament and as punishment by Jehovah.

I'm seeing sackcloth as one step above naked...and without shoes. Whatever it was I don't think it was very comfortable....course even.

What do you think Sackcloth was? Thanks!

sackcloth ~ (A) ~ sackcloth is a material. It is dark in colour and is made of goats' hair. Jews would wear sackcloth and ashes when they were very sad.

Interesting. The caveman (fred flinstone) is primitive, the garments reflect that.

Hummm..... "sackcloth":? Do you think it might be cloth a sack is made of?

Why do you ask that?
I mean like the texture of it..composition of it. I do get the feeling sackcloth is an undesirable thing.

One could argue that there is no point to learning such a thing. But it is in the bible. It has to have a purpose. Everything God wanted us to know is in there.

:? Would that be why John the Baptist wore Camel's hair?

I don't think so. John lived in the desert where temperatures drop steeply at night. And his camel hair garments would have the hair on the outside to protect him. But it also symbolized that he was dead to the world and the fine worldly garments worn by others.

On the other hand, sackcloth was worn as a sign of mourning and repentance, which meant maximizing physical discomfort and self-denial (fasting, ashes on the head), thus the hair was on the inside.

That would be awful! Discomfort for sure.

A hair shirt is designed to maximize your discomfort.
Interesting....self abasement. Explain that to the millions of people that think the object of life is to have as much fun as possible.

So its like you can voluntarily wear the sackcloth or be forced to be put into sackcloth by the LORD if you become too haughty.
