Hey All,
Hebrews 11:1 "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
3 thoughts:
1. Faith is a substance. Does that mean it is physically present? If so, how and how can we prove it?
Actually, the verse doesn't say "faith is a substance". "Substance" might also be rendered "assurance."
Hebrews 11:1 (NASB)
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:1 (ESV)
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:1 (ASV)
1 Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, a conviction of things not seen.
Faith is the assurance of, a settled, inner confidence in, what God has promised and declared is so. Faith is hope matured; faith is stronger, more "solid," more sure, than hope.
The verse doesn't say that "hope is evidence." The word "evidence," according to the grammar of
Hebrews 11:1, is connected to "faith" rather than to "hope."
Faith is the evidence of things not seen, just at is also the assurance of things hoped for. Faith is the subject of the sentence that performs the action (verb) of being (is) which is described as "the assurance of things hoped for." The phrase "a conviction of things not seen" is actually just another way of saying, "assurance of things hoped for." So, "faith," the performer of the action (is) of the sentence (the subject of the sentence), is described in two ways:
- the assurance of things hoped for
- the conviction of things not seen.
3. What are the "things not seen" to which it refers?
The "things not seen" are many:
- God the Father (and the Holy Spirit) whom no man has seen at any time (
1 John 4:12).
- the promises of God by which we are made "partakers in the divine nature" (
2 Peter 1:3-4).
- our spiritual regeneration by the Holy Spirit (
Titus 3:5-8; Romans 8:9-14).
- the eternal home we will one day have with God and the glorification of our physical bodies at the Resurrection (
Philippians 3:20-21; John 14:1-3; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).
And so on.
