What is Dallas like?

I live now in the north Georgia mountains and work on the far north side of the ATL metro area.

In the past week, I have learned that to continue with the company I must move to Dallas Texas (job is in Irving). The company's relocation offer is pretty good, but I'm leaving the hiking/outdoor beauty of Georgia for, I guess, the desert.

I do like how there are a lot of theater companies - so I can get back on stage soon!
And the move will be very good for my career and resume.
I give up the state income tax but I think the cost of living will absorb that bonus.

Just not sure about living an urban lifestyle....

I lived in Mesquite Texas, on Ferguson Road. When I enter I 30 from Ferguson Road, almost immediately I crossed the Dallas city limits. Dallas is not a desert, there are trees and grass there, but if you go about 50 to 75 miles west of Dallas you begin to see scrub bushes and not may trees. To see desert conditions you have to travel further west.

There are plenty of attractions to see. Irving is between Dallas and Forth Worth, but it is like going from Atlanta to Decatur, it is city all the way. It does get a little hotter there and the winters are a little milder, but they do get ice and snow sometimes.

It was about 120 miles of city from Mesquite to Dallas to Forth Worth to White Settlement on I 20 when I was there about 10 years ago. I found that it was easier to drive in the Metroplex than Atlanta, once you learn a few of the main roads. Lovers Lane and Loop 12 were the same road, it just depended where you were. 183 was the intercity road that led from Dallas to Forth worth. If I could remember some of the others I would give them to you, but as I have stated it has been at least 10 years since I been there.

Dallas has short on ramps to freeways and everyone drives AT lease 70 so you best mash the pedal to get up to speed before the on ramp ends they are not going to slow down to let you in.
if you are in Ft. Worth you can drive straight to Dallas without going through Irving and Bedford is the town you go through
I worked in Irving and liked Grapevine as a place to live

Yeah, Dallas is not desert territory. You have to get out past Abilene before you start seeing shrubbery and cacti.

I"m looking at over 55 retirement type apartment complexes in Richardson, Grapevine and Dallas itself. It's not Georgia and I know it will be an adjustment to live in a place that looked pretty dull and flat to me. It was like Michigan in my view - just mild winters, is all.

I don[t have a bad attitude about going there (even tho it sounds like I do), just setting my expectations low so Im not disappointed.

If you are going to be working in Irving then your closest area that you have mentioned would probably be Grapevine. Richardson is on the northeast side. Grand Prairie is close and so is Euless.

One of the best steakhouses is "traildust". There are several in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but don't wear a tie if you go there. They will cut it off and hang it on their wall. One time I was eating at the one near 35E when some Japanese business men came in; they were surprised when their $50 silk ties was cutoff and hung on the wall, this was back in 93 or 94.

just think of the over passes as cement mountians. there are lots of things in Dallas ( or just outside ) to keep a Geogia boy from being bored.
