What is it about Jesus on the cross that offends you?

There is something about Jesus on the cross that offends everyone (that includes believers and non-believers). Can you admit or see what it is that offends you?

In Jesus Christ!

The truth of the cross offends some cause it reminds us our sin and his redemption and our need to repent. Sometimes we don't like to hear the truth.

I've heard people say they don't like it because "Jesus is not on the cross anymore."

To assume one thought that he was would be just as ludicrous as assuming that everyone is offended.

:D

Hi Justice! I pray I see more of you on these forums.

I'm not offended. I don't dwell on the thought of Him suffering on the Cross as many of the Orthodox faiths do. I find nothing offensive about that. I use the "image" of the suffering Jesus on the Cross in somber reflection when I'm felling any self pity.

I REJOICE when I reflect upon the barren cross and the resurrection because this is where the victory of (everlasting) life over death comes into reality for the believer.

1 Cor 15:13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:
1 Cor 15:14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

:amen

The cross is offensive to some because it's a symbol of death to flesh. We are partakers of Jesus' death so that we can be partakers of His life, if we are His.

Justice,

What do you mean by "offended"?

My intuitive answer is as the earlier poster - I am not offended at all - why would His saints and disciples be offended by their Master's work?

Thanks,
Anth

Nothing about Jesus and the cross offends me. If it isn't for Jesus's death on the cross for us all, who could be saved?

Sorry, OP...but your question is ludicrous in part. Especially the part where you pose this question to believers.

To a non-believer, I think it would be offensive, as it shows how non-right we are with God, and shows us of our sins, and what God had to do to make our relationship right again.

To me - as a believer - it is not offensive, rather a symbol of hope in the faith that I have that that death and resurrection brought about two things:
1. power over death for Jesus and the believer
and
2. perfected our relationship with God.

If you were asking this question to a non-believer, it would be appropriate. However, asking it also to believers - in doing this - the question itself is offensive, becasue if I was offended then I wouldn't be a believer.

Hello Vic, I’ve missed you! Hopefully I’ll be able to stop by more often.

Great answers Destiny and Jason!

Jesus had to endure so much and die for everyone’s sin (mine included). Sin put him on the cross and sin is what offends me.

Nick, I pray that sin offends you otherwise there’s not enough nails.

Anth,

For some it’s their doctrine rather they’ll admit it or not. One of my daughters is oneness and she does not attend our Church. I love her dearly but every once in awhile she’ll condemn our other daughter for her clothes (pants, short sleeves) or if she cuts her hair. The men have to have short hair, no facial hair, long sleeves and so forth. The Lord laid it upon my heart to ask her what is it about the cross that offends her? How can they allow the imagine of Jesus Christ on the cross in their Church or in their minds and hearts? Does she believe that God got it wrong because Jesus was not dressed in a suit and tie?

Psalm 22:18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.

Matthew 27:35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

Jesus Christ is the only mediator so why pray to others? Why is there a need to nail other saints to the cross with Jesus? Do they believe this gives them the same power? Why isn’t Jesus Christ good enough?

Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

For others the offense comes because of his nationality and the list goes on and on.

For non-believers Jesus Christ is the offense before, during, and after the cross.

In Jesus Christ!

no facial hair,

You might remind her of the Word of God

"That which God joined together let no man CUT asunder...." :clap

Modalism is the most bizarre teaching - no wonder they can get her to follow the rest (BTW - I am not trinitarian - but Modalism is a much farther departure from the scripture I believe...)

Best wishes,

Anth
