What is the difference between pride and glory?

I thought I would ask everyone here to share their thoughts.


I will share what I have learned so far or my opinions and you can correct me.


The bible never mentions pride to be associated with God. Rather God hates pride because it is evil. Yet if you ask anyone on the street, most people would say they are the same thing. But are they really?

Proverbs 8:13 "The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate."

Many say "I am a proud American....I am proud of my family....I am proud of my farm...I am proud of my home"

But according to Job. Those things are a glory, not a pride.

When those things were taken away from Job he said Job 19:9 "He hath stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head."


This is seriously a head scratching thing. Glory seems to be associated only with God. As he is the king of glory. And he removes glory from those under him. But in Job 41 we read about leviathan, who is the "king of the children of pride"...and whose pride is in his scales. Therefore can we conclude Leviathan is the great dragon...aka Satan?

Is pride a mood of haughtiness where glory is a rank or status?

There are those who are proud of their glory but they do not know God. If that makes sense. Because I now see the difference of righteousness and wickedness, I am also perceiving a difference of pride and glory.

But I am sure there are folks here that understand this more than me. I would love to hear from you.
 
I think all of these answers are good. There are also semantics in words wherein the same word is not received in the sentiment that it was given. I take pride in my work, means to me that I feel good about doing a job well. It is not the same sentiment as the pride that the bible speaks of as evil. The pride God is referring to is that pride which take God's gifts for granted as if you deserved them. When scripture says, no flesh shall glory, it is essentially referring to this same vanity that is unthankful to God, even because we tend to take credit for our moral goodness. Hence scripture says that "thinking they were wise they became fools, nor were they thankful but became vain".
 
God is not opposed to greatness. He is opposed to pride. Think about it.

There are six things which the Lord hates, yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood . . . (Proverbs 6:16–17)

Satan’s original name, “Lucifer,”means “shining one, star.”Lucifer was God’s “chief angel in charge.” But one day he looked into the mirror and became all too smitten with himself. He answered his own riddle, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, I’m the fairest of them all.” Satan got what we would call a “God complex,” making him quickly dissatisfied with his position.

Eyeing God’s throne, he wondered, Maybe there’s room for two.

Ezekiel explains God’s response, “By the abundance of your trade you were internally filled with violence, and you sinned; therefore I have cast you as profane from the mountain of God. And I have destroyed you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire” (Ezekiel 28:16).

We get a glimpse into Satan’s haughtiness and boasting, which led to God’s response, when we read of his five “I will” statements found in the book of Isaiah. These statements clearly outline Satan’s root sin, which is pride. Scripture tells us clearly that pride is first on God’s “hate list” (Proverbs 6:16–17). One reason God hates pride is that it is the funda- mental attitude of the kingdom that rivals His own. The next time you feel tempted to take glory for that which should belong to God, remember what happened to Satan.

Reflection: What was God’s response to Satan’s attempt to climb up higher than a mere creature (Isaiah 14:12–17)? Why does God hate pride? Where is pride lurking in your own life? What will your response be?

Lord, pride is a sin that seeks to take glory away from You. It is a sin that You hate strongly. Sometimes it is easier to look at more obvious sins as those that offend You while ignoring this one that often remains internal in the heart. Lord, help me not to feel superior to those who are caught in obvious sins and help me to recognize the subtle sin of pride when it swells within me so that I can be convicted to humble myself before You. In Jesus name, Amen

Hello thanks for your reply. I do not want to sound like I'm defending Satan, but what you just wrote is against scripture. Such things bother me as they are not the truth. There is no scriptural evidence that Lucifer was an Angel, there is also no bible evidence that Lucifer was an Angel that turned bad and became Satan.

This deserves explaining so here goes..

1. The name Lucifer only appears one time in the KJV. (Isaiah 14:12) If you go outside the KJV chances are the name Lucifer doesnt appear at all.
2. Isaiah 14:11 says Lucifer is covered in worms hence dead. Luke 20:36 says Angels in heaven cannot die. Thus Lucifer could not have been a heavenly Angel
3. Isaiah 14:4 the LORD says for Isaiah to speak this proverb to the king of babylon. Was he essentially saying Lucifer was Nebuchadnezzar? (king of babylon)

Who then is the annointed Cherub of Ezekiel 28:14? Ezekiel 28:15 says he was created perfect until the day iniquity was found in him. If this is Satan it goes against Jesus in John 8:44 that said the devil was a liar and murderer from the beginning and there is no truth in him. Since Jesus is the truth, life, and way (John 14:6) then its like saying there is no Jesus in Satan.

Satan is a created waster of the flesh - Isaiah 54:16, 1 Corinthians 5:5 , Luke 8:32 When I think of Satan I think of the terminator, he is like a cold calculating robot determined to see you perish, he can't be reasoned with and has no empathy. A sociapath basically. Satan wants you to hold his cold dead hands and walk with him into oblivion. (Hebrews 2:14)
 
1 Corinthians 11:15 "But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering."


I thought about this some more. Glory is like something that simply IS. Yet when glory is bragged about it becomes pride. If God gave woman the hair and the body it simply is. But when the woman uses that hair to boast or entice men it is pride. This is also important when it comes to the attire of a woman. How does she decorate herself? Dress modestly or like a harlot?


To the poster above that said "I take pride in my work". I totally understand what you are saying. But what I am saying is this world has given us an incorrect use of the word pride VS the word glory. In this case you felt satiated that you had completed your work...completion. You alone (plus God) reveled in your accomplishment. However, if you had ran to facebook and told the world about your accomplishment would you consider that vanity or a boast? Because until you tell the world about your glory it is simply between you and God. Which goes along with how Jesus said to pray in the privacy of your closet and to give charity in secret and don't blow a trumpet when you do it (aka the rich billionaire publicly telling everyone what charity he has done)

Yes there are semantics and sometimes words have more than one meaning which can cause misunderstanding. Having said that, I do appreciate and can agree with what you are meaning to say about "pride" and "glory" according to the sentiments you wished to express.
