What is the point of wrestling?

What is the point of wrestling? I do not get any satisfaction out of guys grabbing on to each other and holding each other down. I know it's not sexual, but it just looks awkward. I never understood it. :P

i dont know much about the world of greco-roman wrestling or freestlyle or collegiate wrestiling, but i do bjj and it's challenging and u can do it at ur speed and get a good workout on and train realistically unlike some of the striking arts(though u can do full contact but not every day),

dave look up the history of wrestling originally it had punches, and chokes, and kicks to it and it was called pancrease in the olympics(when the romans did it), and it was much like mma.

Dave, if someone has ever outwrestled you, you would see the point pretty quickly. Wrestling is simply controlling your opponent. And it's fun!! :)

Well, my ex GF was stronger than I was physically and she often had me pinned down on the bed to where I couldn't escape. Not very fun if you ask me. I know that isn't considered wrestling, but she was basically controlling me.

you know i could have fun if my wife did that to me i wouldn't mind, strenght does have a play in grappling but if you have better techniques than the large/stronger person than you may submit them. i have submited stronger fighters then me and also have submitted by weaker ones

just mo

Jason's exactly right. Take a look at some of the early ufc's and see Royce Gracie controlling and submitting some opponents that outweigh him by 100lbs or more!!

I've had several students that were huge, but thay lacked technique and I could control them on the ground. one is a blackbelt now and glad he got the training. Not so easy to control anymore, lol.

Dave, I'd suggest getting into grappling, BJJ,MMA,Wrestling,etc... Martial arts doesn't have to mean hitting and kicking eachother.

My son has been in wrestling 3 years now and he loves it!

Some boys are naturally high strung and just need a good outlet. Wrestling seems to be that outlet! :D

Seriously though, some might think that wrestling is just a brute sport, but it's not. It takes not only physical strength and endurance coupled with great coordination and balance, but it takes using your noggin too! I mean, you have to think quick and apply your moves until they almost come automatically. That being said, each match is different so it's not like, "I'll just bust a move on ya"... because your never sure what your opponent knows, or how they will respond until you make your move. In other words, you have to be versatile since you could switch your game plan in a seconds notice.

Well, when someone attacks you and holds you down while his buddies kick and rob you, YOU can let them know how 'uncomfortable' they made you...if you're still conscious. :eyebrow

Thanks! Brian (tired of the wrestling has the ghey) comments. :mad
