Is it necessary to believe in the Trinity to be considered a Christian?

No, I don't think it is necessary to believe in the Trinity to be considered a Christian .
But I do think it is necessary to interact on a personal level with the Trinity to be a Christian :).

So you interact with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in different ways?
They do have different "work" that they accomplish.
 
Do you care to post how you understand the Trinity?
I'm finding it interesting that we all think of it in a different way...(from a different thread).
Thank you for the invitation, but since I am no longer a Trinitarian, it would - I believe - be inappropriate for me to say anymore; except, if the need arises, to help clarify what the CC teaches (as you know, I am a former Catholic).

I understand enough of the doctrine to know that Christianity is a monotheistic faith, and not - as some folk think - tritheistic.

By the way, I do not accept that one needs to be a Trinitarian in order to rightly be considered a Christian.

The Nicene Creed was the first Creed.
It was changed slightly in 381 and again in 423.
Not exact on the dates...
But in 430 it was decided that the Nicene Creed was the correct one.

Would you care to explain what the word BEGOTTEN means?
I wish we would change that translation.
