What is your favorite Christmas story?

Ok, before anyone says the obvious, "the Birth of Christ", aside from that greatest of story, what is your favorite Christmas story? AND ---WHY?

I should have narrowed the rules. :)....I'm thinking less biblical, more worldly stories.

For example. My favorite "tale" is A Christmas Carol. I like it because of the overarching biblical truth it speaks to how we should love our fellow man.

a christmas carol.

but this year im doing the feast of lights(channukah) and that has changed the cleansing of the temple thing for me.

channukah while never a "scriptural "thing from the tanakh points to the LORD.

i could say the menorah that was miraculously lit for eight days was a type of christ.

That's easy for me: 'A Christmas Carol'. The 1953 English version with Alastair Sim is the best version.

It's great literature with lots of spiritual depth. It took me a few years to realize, but Scrooge essentially gets saved at the end, his generosity and joy being the signature marks of the new creation he has become. It's a wonderful story. Every year I think about starting a thread to talk about it.

Along more secular lines I really like 'The Family Man' with Nicolas Cage.

Of course there is 'It's a Wonderful Life', too.

There is this little book (180 pages) called "The Donkey's Gift" by Thomas Coffey. It's about this truly rebellious, hard-bitten and hard-biting donkey who has had it with the world of people. Then, after escaping and causing problems for his owner one too many times, he is facing slaughter.

That is until a man named Joseph comes along and chooses him for the all important job of carrying his pregnant wife Mary to Bethlehem.

This book is inspiring, laugh out loud funny at times and shows how love and compassion can change hearts and minds.

We read it through every few Christmases. If you've never read it, I highly recommend it.

lol, well then if i read that now, i wouldnt ever think of the donkey commander the same ever again.

or poor zianullah the donkey who died while serving our country or jr.

those animals are really gentle.

.
I have read the story of Joseph's trek to Bethlehem many times and have not been able to find a donkey in the story. And since his wife was in her third trimester, ready to pop any day, I tend to think they traveled in a wagon

Something else that has never set well with me is art depicting Joseph and his wife traveling alone. That's highly unlikely. In point of fact; Joseph and his wife are known to have traveled with relatives to important functions (e.g. Luke 2:41-44). Since Joseph's kin, and his wife's kin, were all related to David; it makes sense they would "car pool" so to speak.

My favorite Christmas-related story? Love Actually; no contest.
