What is your purpose?

Gordon

Member
I believe we are to have a relationship with Jesus as our main purpose. To reflect him to the world and to spread the gospel. What is it you are choosing to do with your life in light of whatever you believe?

Some people find purpose in being a spouse or parent primarily. Some people try to make the world a better place. Some people are artists. Some are missionaries.

Self actualization is a human need. Most people who have made an impact had some kind of vision for their life. Do you have this kind of vision or are you stuck in the day to day demands of life?

I think a good example of this is the poor woman who gave two mites. She was clearly living for the Kingdom and now she has been honored for it by God himself for all of us to hear.

Right now my purpose is to be my husband's helpmeet and to team with him in reaching out to others. We also pray for our family and for the salvation of friends.

The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever. That is the opinion of the Westminster Shorter Catechism completed in 1647 by English and Scot "divines," or theological writers. I have yet to find a better definition of the purpose of man on this Earth.

Y'know, my view of the world isn't as positive as it used to be. It's because of the hope found in Jesus that I want to try to make the world a better place. I'm not completely sure what direction to go in my life yet, but whatever it is I want to help people in some way.
I do want to be an artist and get into art professionally, use art to express good messages, but not just that.

How are you reaching out to others? My church encourages us to discuss God in our everyday circles so I try to talk about God at work when I see a chance.

Cool I used to love art. I want to help people too so I'm saving money so I can possibly later start a charity or something. I wish my job was about helping people, I was going to be a school teacher but changed my mind.

Hi Gordon,

I think our purpose can be summed up in this: To Glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever.

So what do you do to glorify God?
All I do is to glorify Him, be it serving in my workplace as a substance abuse counselor, serving in my church in the choir and in parent education on how to speak to your children about drugs, alcohol and sex, or just riding my bike for my own health and well-being. It is an attitude more than an action. I stay focused on God, though I will add "most of the time." No man is able to remain in communion and focus with God all the tiime, or he would never have a bad or an impure thought, never say the wrong thing, never do something that fails to please Him. Perfection is not guaranteed in this life, but living as close to perfect as humanly possible while keeping in mind that our failures are to be confessed and they will be forgiven, will result in perfection in the next life.

Inspiring. There is a topic in Christian talk and advice that needs you.

questdriven:

You know, it's kind of a good aim but first and foremost, I want my Bible reading and prayerful activities before the Lord to make me a better person before Him, and be a good testimony.

And to help and encourage others who have similar aims.

The world is under judgment and we are waiting for the Lord to return, but He still may have those whom He wants us to reach. (The world itself is a lost cause, prior to the Second Coming.)

Actually, your interest in art, sounds great. Are you kind of thinking of specifically Christian messages in art? painting, designs, etc?

Blessings.

I used to think I was going to "change the world" now I'm just trying to change my corner of it. Being a wife and mother and friend. I am a home health nurse and I volunteer at my daughters school and try to help out local people when I can.Like my neighbor when his wife died was so hopeless and I used to just go sit and cry with him and show him concern.

Yes the Lord would have us be compassionate and sounds like you are an example of this.

I think the scope of the believer's activity is guided by Scripture and by the fact that our activity is spiritual in nature, (with very practical consequences, of course).

Blessings.

So like tnd what are you doing in light of this belief?

It sounds like you are doing a lot to me. That emotional support you are able to give sounds like a gift from God.

I like the Westminster Confession definition one poster so kindly provided. For me, part of glorifying God would mean embracing recovery from madness and contributing to society.
