i train at a local mma gym and do only the bjj.i have teens and or pre-teens that train. From a christian parent view your thoughts?

keep in mind this will be only on this topic.
no gun debate
no knife debate

You've got me at a disadvantage Jason as I don't know what MMA or BJJ stand for. Maybe that also means that I probably lack the knowledge for my opinion to have any merit anyway.

mixed martial arts and brazilian ju jitsu. have you heard of the ufc?

I think it's great exercise, builds self esteem, and fun family time. Here are my boys. I teach in my home.

i kinda know your position, but i will ask anyway. How do you teach them not use it in school given zero tolerance.

It's no different than teaching your kids not to fight at all. Their ability or training does NOT contribute to violent actions.

i should have known that. i asked for the reason that mma and bjj seems to have more of these trash talking teens that do start crap here. the forge kicks them out. Dan is big on that.Of course the size of these teens these days is scary.

That's a parenting, or lack of, problem. Nothing to do with any art. No more than teaching football leads to trash talk and kids being randomly tackled in the hallways.

One of my Granddaughters loved it... I dont know which kind.. She earnd a green belt then they moved and .......

Teaching a child an art should be held in the same view as teaching and adult an art, right? :chin

My daughter wants to do Karate, but unfortunately I can’t afford it. The classes are really expensive here. But all in all, I think it is really good exercise for children, and with us living in one of the most dangerous countries in the world, it can come in very handy if you know how to protect yourself.<O:p</O:p

yeah sure no problem. My kids have done karate for the last 3 years and it hasn't hurt them. My girls can look after themselves better than without it. At the enfd they pay respects the the god of sushi or whatever it is they do. IN one ear and out the other.

Yeah go for it. Your doing our kids a favor. kids that learn discipline will do better at studies.

Besides there is always some dork at school that wil not take no for an answer and much as you try to keep the peace you still had to...them. You only had to do it once!
People taught me to fight to some degree which I was thankful for.

Immature young male minds don't always understand the concepts surrounding peace and love, though some do. When I grew up It wasnt that way, I grew up in rough areas.

Hope thats an OK answer. I was just answering from my reality though I realize mine wasnt like most peoples.

while brian does hybrid art and includes mma in his art. i will look for videos and mainly wanted to discuss mma and bjj as these are realy agressive in the sports. i know in florida the kids/mma and bjj there are rules in place to minimize injuries per state law.

Jason,

I see that you see a difference in BJJ/MMA (brazillian jujitsu/mixed martial arts) and places that teach "karate" or tae kwon do.
I know the difference and you know the difference, but most people see a martial arte training environment and see,"karate," period.

Arts like BJJ/MMA and judo include greater physical contact and "live" training. There is a much more opportunity to get hurt or hurt someone else. There's also the full contact competition aspect of it.
NO, I don't think kids should compete in MMA at all. BJJ and judo is fine, but in those arts you do not ground and pound your opponent.
I stress to the boys the importance of self control, especially at school where there could be severe consequences for fighting. But, for outside of school and all other aspects I want them to know the three ranges of fighting, stand-up,clinch,and ground. This will better equip them to escape an attacker, defend themselves or protect themselves from being injured anywhere you put them.

i understand that but i will ask what the rules are for teens and so on mma. many kids that are high school wrestlers here also do mma. they train only.i know some mma matches in teens and amateurs may not have strikes to the face or gnp, at all.

If that's their rules it isn't really mma. I don't like the idea of teens doing mma.
Training mma is one thing, beating the crap out of one another for sport is another.
