That's quite interesting. I was just wondering about that sometime in the last couple of days. Thanks for that.
None of those passages show what the star was. We certainly can't just pick instances of the use of "star" and use them to say what the star was at Jesus' birth. It could very well have been a natural phenomena. Scripture simply doesn't say.We needn't go to the news to find the answer. The identity of the "star of Bethlehem" is given to us by God:
Matthew 2:1-2 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is He that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen His star in the east, and are come to worship Him.
2:9-10 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
Revelation 1:20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.
It would haver to be a light source in low synchronous orbit over Bethelehem. Of course it would not be difficult for God to have placed an angel (or something else) in such a spot.
However, it does not seem likely that God would do this. Consider what the placement of this 'star' caused: The pagan astrologers followed it to Herod (and told him about the new King). This led to the slaughter of many innocent children! This sounds more like the work of some other person than God!
