"You shall call His name Jesus." Matthew 1:21
In the original Hebrew language every person was given a name that had a meaning. Caleb is the word for dog, which means "all heart." Can you think of an animal with more heart than a dog? Can you think of a person with more heart than Caleb? He was one of the original 12 spies sent into the Promised Land by Moses. He and Joshua were the only two that came back with good reports. When it was finally time for the children of Israel to take the promised land Caleb was given a special section. He was still a man of heart because he just went up and took the land.
Many other Biblical characters had names that matched their personalities. Barnabas' name means "son of encouragement." He was continually encouraging others. Jacobs name meant "schemer," and he repeatedly manipulated people and situations for his own selfish ends.
No on has ever been more appropriately named than Jesus. Jesus means "the Lord saves" and defines both who Jesus is and why he came. He was also called Immanuel, when means "God with us." (Matt 1:23) His name reveals our eternal hope!
