I sat under a Pastor for 30+ years that taught when you are converted you are covered by Grace, meaning if I accepted the Lord As Saviour and died I would be granted eternal life, but that the Rebirth process had just started. So after 30 years,I lean towards this. However,I now find others that believe you are instantly Born Again.I can find many scriptures that could point either way, but here's the main one:
1Peter 1:23 Here he uses the term "being" not "having" been.

we are conceived , but not yet born for 9 months... then we be babies,.,, toddlers .. kids ,, teens then we begin to mature. ... hopefully

Added:

I believe we are 'bornagain' for salvation at conversation..the we grow..

I agree with Reba's assessment. I believe that, just like seeds, we do neither sprout (being born again) at the same rate nor do we grow at the same rate. Some seeds pop out of the ground 2 or three days after being sown and buried and yet others will not be seen for almost a week. It took over 23 years with many people watering before the seed, planted in my heart of hearts before it sprouted and began to grow. Just as the seed of corn will spring out of the ground with a baby corn stalk over night, Christians are born over just sn instant and begin to grow.

That makes sense. Although if one were really, hmmmm, let's say, fully baptized in the Spirit,he /she would know all things by then.I don't know how to put thoughts in words at times.I guess what I'm trying to say, though badly,If a person is fully Born Again and full of the Holy Ghost,he/she would have attained the level as Stephen,Paul and others and know all things.
Just a thought.......

Stephen ande Paul, nowhere in scripture claimed that sort of wisdom, where do you get that from?

I'll vouch for taylor. He and I don't see eye to eye on some things, but he has a heart for Christ. I'm sure of that.

I believe we are born from above, instanious upon receiving His faith. I do think it takes time to grow and mature that faith. Some grow quicker than others, but as long as there is growth that's a sign of true faith.

Think of the theif on the cross. Jesus said we must be born from above to see the kingdom. I'm pretty sure that theif died within hours of him receiving Christs faith. Jesus assured him he would be in paradise that day.

It is my belief that "justification" is a one time occurrence and happens when we believe. I understand justification is "just as if I had never sinned". When a person receives salvation, it is not that God forgives, but that he sees us in Christ with no reason to forgive, there is no sin. Christ took our sin and gave to us his righteousness.

Sanctification is an on going thing. We are being set apart for the Father. We are like a diamond, the rough edges have to be chiseled away to expose our inner beauty and light reflective abilities. We are a work in progress as believers, but we have already become a "born one" of God.

There's a few scriptures that indicate that being reborn is a process and not something that is instantaneous.

Roman 12:2
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.../

John 1:12
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:.../

1 Peter 1:23
23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God which liveth and abideth for ever.../

This is saying that it is accomplished by the Word of God. Or, in other words...reading your Bible (and Praying of course). Most Christians that I see, do not give the Word of God the attention it deserves. God does speak to us through His Word. He really does. :study

hello Edward, dirtfarmer here

In John 5:24 Jesus said, " He that heareth my word and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation;" Notice, "hath everlasting life" past tense: "shall not come into condemnation" future tense. Everlasting life has no condemnation because of being born from above and being sealed with the Spirit of promise.

John 5:39 " Search the scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life". Where did those that Jesus was speaking to believe that their eternal life resided? Was it not scriptures, but where did Jesus say the scriptures said that eternal life resided? Was it not in him? "And(but) they (scriptures) are they(the testimony) which testify of me." Jesus is saying that our eternal life is not in scriptures but in himself, which the scriptures testify to.

I was taught that once you get (genuinely) saved, you're Born Again, forgiven. From that point on, its maturation and sanctification. Some groups do believe in Baptism of The Holy Spirit, which is separate from and follows getting saved/Born Again. I prayed for Baptism of the Holy Spirit (I figured I could use all the help I could get), and its made a difference...

hello Christ_empowered, dirtfarmer here

It is my belief that there is only one baptism of the Holy Spirit according to Ephesians 4:5, but there are many fillings with the Spirit. I understand that there are many that believe in "a second work of the Spirit". I don't.

The moment you believe you can't save yourself and need a Savior.

Being born again and the renewal of mind is well, you're using scriptures for both.
