Classik, you have a good question and the short answer is that prophets are with us today everywhere where God has set them in the Church. I won't take the time to include all the New Testament references but if you look up the word "prophet" / "prophesy" etc. in a concordance you will see that they are a very important part of the New Testament Church and the book of Acts conveys how many of them functioned in the early Church. The problem with this question is two-fold - #1 people only think of prophets as people who only declare future events when more appropraitely they should be viewed as people who provide a revelation from the Lord which may or may not have to do with some future event.
Consider 1 Corinthians 14:3 which says, "But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and exhoration, and comfort." KJV
Paul in these same chapters encourages believers to desire that they might prosephy which leads to problem # 2 - People hold to the completely unscriptural view that the gift of prophesy has "passed away" or is done. There is no hint of this in Scripture but rather phophets will exist as long as this period of time the Church is in. It should also be noted that the gift of prophesy is by the Holy Spirit and has nothing to do with "natural talents." Gifts from the Spirit are just that - gifts from the Holy Spirit - and are only found in born again Spirit filled believers. If they could be manifested without the Spirit then they could not be considered Spiritual gifts. Much of the Church has not sought these giftings as Paul describes and / or does not believe in them and hence does not see them.
Like I said, I think you have a good question which a study of all the New Testament references to the subject would reveal a great deal.
God Bless Brother!
