Where are our prophets today?

I still strongly believe prophets and prophetesses exist today. For those of us who believe they do (and if you can prove they don't...tell us why), why do we lack prophets and prophetesses as powerful as the ones we have in the Old Testament?

Re: Where ate our prophets today?

I have heard of some people doing that when they visit churches. It has to be there as it is a spiritual gift listed in the bible. Also maybe in small ways we all are to a lesser degree through the workings of the holy spirit.

Maybe the holy spirit is to us our super prophet like the OT guys needed for guidance.

Why do prophets exist? I have a weird theory about this. I believe there are people born with special abilities and they see stuff most people cant. Now these people end up on either side of the fence, on the christian side they become prophets (the ones who see future stuff etc) and their gifts are used by God in the same way a person who is an excellent teacher is used by God and their God given teaching gift may be something they are naturally inclined to. It is still God given even before conversion.

I think the same type of people on the other side of Christianity are called clairvoyants and other things like that. That to me would explain why both exist in bible teachings.

There are prophets. But these are not usually welcome in the format of an institutional church. Too much truth! Why spoil a good service with the truth? ;)

While the Bible tells us there are Spiritual gifts still given out, such as prophecy, I believe there are no prophets today in the spiritual sense of the O.T. The Holy Spirit sealed the Holy Bible, which replaced the prophets, John the Baptist being the last. Now I know there are many prophets out there who would disagree with that, it is only my opinion! Bless the LORD.

Classik, you have a good question and the short answer is that prophets are with us today everywhere where God has set them in the Church. I won't take the time to include all the New Testament references but if you look up the word "prophet" / "prophesy" etc. in a concordance you will see that they are a very important part of the New Testament Church and the book of Acts conveys how many of them functioned in the early Church. The problem with this question is two-fold - #1 people only think of prophets as people who only declare future events when more appropraitely they should be viewed as people who provide a revelation from the Lord which may or may not have to do with some future event.

Consider 1 Corinthians 14:3 which says, "But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and exhoration, and comfort." KJV

Paul in these same chapters encourages believers to desire that they might prosephy which leads to problem # 2 - People hold to the completely unscriptural view that the gift of prophesy has "passed away" or is done. There is no hint of this in Scripture but rather phophets will exist as long as this period of time the Church is in. It should also be noted that the gift of prophesy is by the Holy Spirit and has nothing to do with "natural talents." Gifts from the Spirit are just that - gifts from the Holy Spirit - and are only found in born again Spirit filled believers. If they could be manifested without the Spirit then they could not be considered Spiritual gifts. Much of the Church has not sought these giftings as Paul describes and / or does not believe in them and hence does not see them.

Like I said, I think you have a good question which a study of all the New Testament references to the subject would reveal a great deal.

God Bless Brother!

I agree with this.

(But, I don't know why some suffer 'doubt'.:sad

Some say to themselves: What if nothing happens?....)

Look what has happened to the USA in the last 50 years... how many really listened to Billy Graham... agree ugh

But we do have the GOOD news the Gospel Praise the Lord He is good, just, faithful!

Of what use would a prophet be today? What could a prophet say that isn't already found in scripture? Do we want a prophet today telling us to change course, or do we really want a prophet to tell all those other people they need to find Jesus. As Christians, I thought that was our job.

True, but how is that different from most prophets in the Bible?

Also, I can't help but recall what happened to the kingdoms who did ignore those prophets... ugh...

You know, all these prophets say the bitter truth.....and at the time when the truth seems old-fashioned and ridiculous.

You are right, reba and I think America needs God's divine touch upon their hearing apparatuses. :lol
