where do you vacation?

and nothing to see out there near yakima washington. i was stationed at ft.lewis.i have traveled to the yakima training area. it reminds me of the old west with the tumble weeds.

J:

Yakima, WA: this is where the writer Raymond Carver was from, right?

Destin FL. we like to go in September at the beginning of the off season when we can. otherwise We'll go early June. That's usually our main vacation. Then we try to do something unique for the kids. We've done Disney, Gatlinburg TN, Hot Springs AR....something that has a water park, or theme type area.

During the fall and early spring we like to rent cabins at state parks and do some hiking, and other more outdoor stuff.

I'm planning to rent an RV and take my family out West next summer, on a two week road trip vacation though TX New Mexico Arizona and Hit the Grand Canyon. Then run back through the south of those same states.

Why am I thinking Robin Williams right about now?

We try to go to Chicago when we can - great town! But my favorite vacation is a beach house.
And as you prolly know, Chicagoans go to Michigan for vacation.

I like to watch the news on WGN because it reminds me of growing up in the Chicago viewing area. My mom was born in Chicago. I was born north of Chicago and grew up in northern Indiana. Did you know Krusty the Clown is based on WGN's Bozo the clown? Hey kids! I never noticed his gruff voice and his adult wit until it was pointed out in a recent show about WGN's children's shows. Great times growing up in the '70s around Chicago.

...and I'll always have a tender spot in my heart for the Cubs.:yes

Yes, well Lake Michigan (albeit partly also in Illinois and Wisconsin as well as the State of Michigan) is kind of real close to the Windy City...

im unsure. all i know is the training area and also hanson the nuclear waste facility is in that area and something for the dept of energy.

Oh okay. Anyway Raymond Carver was sort of known as a short story writer of the Pacific Northwest.

im not that into novels. it has been almost twenty years since i have seen the evergreen state. your country has regions that look like that state. ie british columbia and also vancover island.

j: Yes, I've long thought how the border brings together very strong geographical similarities; it's a shared Continent, of course. There is something about Raymond Carver's Pacific Northwest background that gives an extra dimension to his writings, I think, even though I don't particularly like some of the things he wrote.

I go to Scotland, as i'm a 10 minute bus ride from the border and more than willing to camp it makes for a cheap holiday. I love it because, depending on my mood, it is quite possible to go to the big cities (Glasgow, Edinburgh) or just go for a wander in the countryside. Sometimes we go to the Lake District as it's just so pretty, but never any further south. It gets too expensive to travel past Yorkshire really, at least on the spare money I have.

where do you and your family go?
do you have a tradition?
what do you like best about vacations?

my family goes to the beach every summer. were going to Savannah,Georgia before school this year and disney world for Christmas and spring break possibly a cruise!

has anyone ever been to Savannah?

I'm glad you asked. I'm starting my vacation tomorrow. It is a modest one. I drive from Reno to Klamath Falls, Oregon, tomorrow. Then it's to Bandon, Oregon, and a neat resort on the beach for a night. Then it's down to Weed, California, for a night and then back home.

So you're in Reno? did you ever go see the Hoover Dame and Lake Mead? must be impressive.

Hawai'i. It's just me and the wife at home now, so when we can, we visit our daughter, who lives in Kona. Its a great change for when we need a break from New Englad winters.
