A gas explosion ripped through a coal mine in eastern China Tuesday, killing at least 63 miners and leaving 23 others missing 1,500 feet underground, officials said. Tornadoes swept across the Midwest and South overnight and Wednesday, killing two people in Illinois and battering a region still trying to recover from deadly twisters that struck over the weekend. The death toll in the South from tornados this past week is at 40.
