About 1960 I had this bike, a red Huffy and it had to be a DUMB girls bike or nothing..the simplest bike possible, money was hard to come by.. One day George, school mate, and i were playing chicken ... That idiot did not chicken ... He bent the aluminum front finder support... so i beat him up :) Knowing he woudl not tell any one ... who was going to admit a girl wooped 'em

Poor George....I bet his psyche is damaged to this day.....I am sure his psychologist would thank you though.

Wow, that's some firecracker, Brother! If I did that right, 1288 kilojoules figures out to right at 950,000 foot-pounds, or, enough energy to lift 950K pounds, one foot off of the ground. That's a lot of energy! Long fuse, long fuse!

lift 950K one foot?? No. Are you certain that 3.078E-7 tn (ton of TNT) can lift that much? Oh! Lol -- I meant Joules, not kilojoules. I didn't say it right. I'm much more into theory. It was still 'low explosive' (see deflagration vs detonation, Google is our friend). The amount of energy is the same but the rate at which the energy is released changes. Fireworks and the like are low explosives, not 'high'.

I can only guess the actual amount of energy released. The best we did was shoot an empty garbage can about as high as the roof. We did that across the street from the fire station, in an empty field. I have no clue how that translates to how many pounds could be lifted one foot but I do know that NOBODY would volunteer to stand on the can! :mischief

We were working on fuse placement and tested a variety of powers to determine the most efficient burn rate for our purpose. Frankly, the conversion to energy is beyond me. My friend (met him in 2nd grade and still friends today) was the brains of our little group of hellions and I think he worked it out in BTU's not joules anyway.

:shock Oh. I see what I did. (maybe? -- I'm so confused now)
Did I mean to say 1288 joules and not kilojoules? Off by an order of 1,000. Not my worst "wrong answer" . :biggrin2 I should have said, "way bigger than an M-80" or something less technical. Thanks Edward, you're teaching me to better say what I mean. They say 'Pride goes before a fall' and here I was complimenting myself on being able to do some metric conversions even while typing.

But that's another difference b/w 'now' and the good ol' days, right? I love the concept of metrics but the implementation (for me) still needs involves translation and needed improvement.

Also on the "1/4 stick of dynamite" thing...I used to hear that all the time growing up, and no-one seemed to question it (except me, of course:rolleyes). It just didn't sound right. And it's not. M80s contain flash powder, a "low explosive", whereas dynamite is a stabilized form of nitroglycerine, a "high explosive". Maybe M80s contain one-fourth the amount of powder compared with a stick of dynamite, but there's no comparison as one's a low explosive and the other's a high explosive. If you were forced to calculate an RE factor, I imagine the power of an M80 would be on the order of 1/80th of a stick of dyno, certainly not 1/4.

Urban myths rule!

Thanks, KevinK Suffice it to say, we used to get away with things that would likely get us called "Terrorists" now. Somebody would call the FBI at minimum, right?

Hebrews 1:14 KJV
Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

If not for the angels I would not have made it through the years you describe. After all the USA had put their enemies under their foot. They forgot the devil was looking for whom he might destroy, and my parents had no idea their son would tach 6,200rpm in 4th gear on recap tires (I had barely left home by this time). I was put in jail once at over 5,000rpm, drunk, drag racing on the interstate while in the military. Stupid to the core. The goodness of God protecting me to inherit the kingdom. Way beyond all I can comprehend.

So how do we make it to full age? Grace.

No kidding. I was driving my Dad's International Harvester 1/2 ton pickup with 3 on the column when I was 10 years old. IT topped out at exactly 105 mph which is also exactly how fast I drove it on gravel roads. Could barely see over the dash. Amazing to still be here.

one of the worst things i ever did was break every piece of a glass i could hit with a rock in the house next door... Walter and myself...and little brother... did it just cuz... we pulled the shades down trying to cover our tracks... little brother would not keep his mouth shut... Dad not mom spanked me for that one... twice once for involving my brother he was about 6 years old and the other for the windows.. I never broke a window on purpose again.. :) the house was next door to the parsonage .. not real smart...
